if the owners genuinely think they are going to get 65,000 fans into anfield at £48 quid a time to watch the likes of shane long then in my opinion they are very much mistaken.
there were big gaps in a 45,000 seat stadium when hodgson was in charge. no mid table side is going to sell out 65,000 seats, not in this era anyway, it`s not 1959 anymore, it`s not half a crown to get in, and mid table is exactly where we will end up with this type of transfer philosophy. rodgers may be a better manager than hodgson but he`s not a miracle worker, he`s not going to turn shane long into ian rush. a title charge isnt going to be built on the back of shane long.
as torres said in his interview the other day when it became clear that liverpool didnt have a project (ambition) anymore then he felt he was left with no other option but to move on. if we keep on signing the likes of long or hooper (or both) i think there will be a few more players looking for the exit signs.

I wonder what you thought when the club bought players like Keegan from lower level clubs.

Or even Joe Allen who arrived from a mid table club.

Kenny came from Scotland

Would you have turned away Jelavic from Scotland ?

i think what ycsatbjywbiastkamb is getting at is that we should be aiming for better players than Shane Long.

There are plenty more 25 year olds who are far better than long and wouldnt cost that much more.

Not much worth in recalling Carroll in January because in that month Borini will be back and we’ll buy a striker.

Not impressed by the Shane Long rumours.  He's a good player and is a willing runner, great attitude, but he's short of quality at the very top level and at 25 or so isn't going to improve greatly.  I've watched him plenty of times for Ireland and I am pretty confident he would be a poor signing.

Hooper I think is a different animal.  Similar age to Long, but his goalscoring record, albeit at a lower level at Huddersfield then the SPL, is phenomenal.  Crucially for a Rodgers team he's also capable of picking up the ball outside the box and linking play.  His few performances in the Champions League for Celtic have been very impressive too.  I'm not totally convinced, because the Premiership is a step up, but he's a better bet than Long.  Is he the next Jelavic or the next David Nugent?  Sometimes you don't know which way they'll go until they make the step up to the Premiership.

I'd be having a look at that Malaga team for some bargains (Much like Wenger had the intelligence to do with Cazorla in the summer).  Some very good players and an owner who reportedly wants out and will listen to offers.

In some ways I'd also be tempted to nick Ba off Newcastle for the 7 mil release (which IS active again in January, Pardew has admitted it).  All this talk of his 'dodgy' knee.  How dodgy can it really be when he's banged in all those goals no problem for West Ham and Newcastle?  Also it'd get Newcastle back to some degree after they fleeced us for Carroll then tried to take him back on loan.

Dont tempt fate.

We sign Ba his knee will blow up 15 minutes into the first game he plays and everyone laughs at us.

Carroll is finished at Liverpool.  Sad, to admit it, but he had his chance and it didn't work out.  Time to move on, get some money back and try again.  The same can be said for Downing too. He's sh!te

How about Alvaro Negredo? We were linked with him a couple transfer windows ago if I'm not mistaken, and he's been a relatively consistent goal scorer at Sevilla.  Played a bit for Spain as well.  Not sure he'd be too interested in leaving Sevilla, but they aren't in Europe at all right now, and I thought he had wanted to leave Sevilla at some point.

Of course I could just be making this all up.

we should be going all out for huntelaar with him refusing to sign a new contract at schalke. with him being on a bosman in the summer the price will be knocked down. the only problem is selling the club to him with no champions league football.

I suspect the funds from these two will be the basis of any spending BR gets to do.  There should be not far off £25m if both are sold.  Enough to buy a good striker, and pay his wages with what we were paying Downing and Carroll.  Maybe even buy a decent striker (young one), AND get Huntelaar on a Bosman and pay him the wages he'd want!

I'd have a guess at £30 million in the war chest and then any player sales. Carroll out, Downing out, cole out. frees up some cash to add to the £30 million.
Then buy in a good striker and as Benny said possibly a LB. then watch us fly.

Boring is out for three months numbnuts.

As much as I like Carroll, he is disposable. On the proviso we actually spend money in January and ideally buy two strikers.
