Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Redrider » Wed Oct 27, 2004 9:28 pm

What do the LFC fans out East from the UK think of the need to have a personality to attract support and promotional interest in LFC in the Middle East and Asia ?
Which of the current LFC players has the best image for promotional purposes out your way ?  ???   ???

Is there a reason why we still constantly discuss Michael Owen in LFC General Discussion or have we not moved on with our lives?

AB, going off slightly on the wrong tack !! This isn't about Micheal Owen, that's only how it started.
This is about the whole culture of promoting the image of a Football Club and how to capitalise on a World Market, raise interest, finance and promotional/sponsorship funds.
There is a theory that we can just rely on the name and success of the club, but there is also a theory that an image is best promoted through association with personalities. Read back through some of my posts here.
eg Tiger Woods and Nike and the post from L-Type with the association in the US of Beckham, Mufc and Soccer.
Can we raise our profile in the emerging football markets of the world, with any of our current players, eg Can we use Alonso in areas of the world where Spanish is the predominant language to capture interest ?

St Mick, You are correct and it is not just on the pitch that he has not been effectively replaced.
The bigger loss may be to our promotional image around the world.
But both areas can be addressed, Rafa is probably on the cusp of sorting out the 'net stretching aspect'
But are our 'Business Brains' looking at the promo' side of affairs or do they just leave that to the players and their agents ?

Along with Alonso,Garcia, and possibly Nunez [if he proves himself] yes we could raise our profile in the football market. Why couldn't we?

In Scotland most personalities from English football become figures for immediate ridicule as they become famous. However, that just disguises secret admiration and jealousy.
With respect to earning power, there is no doubt that a football club name means a lot more when it is possible to link the name of an iconic player with the Club. Here in Glasgow, everyonr still associates Owen with Liverpool even though he is with Madrid, maybe the magic still works even though he has departed.

Macgreger, How were LFC perceived in Scotland, when Dalglish played for the Red's ?
I think that if Dalglish had played for England and had more International exposure, he would have been considered in a similar way to Beckham and Owen as worldwide super star names.

Is there a reason we discuss Rome 77, or Cardiff 2001?

Its a part of our proud history, and why not remenisce every now and again.

Also as the saint said, he has left a big hole.

yes but how much do you know about the world of marketting outside of pure football?

Believe me, I know lots of people who have never heard of Liverpool, they've heard of Man U, Real Madrid and one or two (of about 80) have heard of Arsenal.  Does that prove that football has very little to do with marketting BY ITSELF.  They'd all heard of Beckham, they'd all hear of Ronaldo.  About half had heard of Owen, 4 had heard of Henry, none had heard of Zidane, Schvechenko, Gerrard, Vieira, Nedved, Ronaldinho etc.  Get ready for this... nearly half had heard of Kewell.  Does that show you that your CV mightn't be as important from a marketting perspective as most football people would have you believe.  Liverpool is famous in Asia still but I would bet my house that merchandising sales will fall over their with the sale of Owen.  Players like Alonso and Garcia who are charismatic (especially Garcia) with the right profile, tours and sponsors could become major, major marketting tools.  Players like Gerrard however, as great a footballer as he is, have considerably less marketting value.  Dont get me wrong I'd take Gerrard over Owen every day from a football perspective but not from a marketting point of view.

Starbridge, how right you are. The key to succesful marketing is to take a well known product name, like LFC but project it by using a personality that people can associate with.
Once you have people interested, wearing the shirt with the name on, getting the haircut, buying the footware etc, then making the real money begins.
The big money comes from TV audiences and advertising, sponsorship deals with companies promoting global products, all of which is done by having a face that people recognise, feel comfortable with and associate themselves with.
The club should pick the likely personalities and focus on developing and projecting their image.
I am not actually advocating this, but if Owen were brought back to LFC for £10m, we would re-coup all of that and more in additional in Sponsorship and Advertising, if we had a successful team and Owen kept his image clean.
