The last time we went for a guy whose achievements were keeping a club in the prem it got a lot worse for us.
And Arsenal sacked George Graham who won them multiple silverware for a relatively unknown manager managing a Japanese club. I'm pretty sure a lot of Arsenal fans had a negative reaction when Wenger replaced Graham, but then Wenger went on to win the league with Arsenal in his second season as manager.
Graham was sacked for financial problems and Wenger had already won titles in Europe for Monaco and got to the UEFA Cup final before he went to Japan.
Not the same as appointing someone whose triumph is keeping a club in the prem
You would be fuming if we proposed taking a manager from the J League so it was very much
a gamble despite Wengers early work at Monaco.
All Wigan can do is survive and thats their achievement, they simply dont have the finance or
resources to go beyond that.
Success in football is relevant to circumstance and if Wigan stay up thats equivalent to us
reaching the top 4 places, which we failed to do by the way.
Anyway Im not sure Martinez will take the job now, and there may be a surprise appointment
so its certainly going to be an interesting and exciting week ahead.
