It's all ifs and buts, but as I say we've had a lot of good managers over the years who ultimately couldn't get us back to where we desire and that's consistently being top of the pile.

I don't but it's what I'm thinking! When you're appointing a manager you want someone players want to play for

Well that wasn't the case with Kenny was it? The players let him down big time last season. They couldn't even be bothered playing for a legend of this football club. At the end of the day footballers are paid to play, not to make political decisions of who they will and will not play for.

hmm work with Maureen, work with Martinez...where would you go?

The players at the club all know about what Kenny has achieved with us, from the outside our history may not be so clear tho
All round the fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and could he play!)
Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
'Bout the glory, round the Fields of Anfield Road

Well the last time we went for a proven current manager we actually won the CL . The last time we went for a guy whose achievements were keeping a club in the prem it got a lot worse for us.

The players might have known what Kenny achieved at Liverpool, but collectively they all let him down last season.

And Arsenal sacked George Graham who won them multiple silverware for a relatively unknown manager managing a Japanese club. I'm pretty sure a lot of Arsenal fans had a negative reaction when Wenger replaced Graham, but then Wenger went on to win the league with Arsenal in his second season as manager.

Graham was sacked for financial problems and Wenger had already won titles in Europe for Monaco and got to the UEFA Cup final before he went to Japan.

Not the same as appointing someone whose triumph is keeping a club in the prem

Its a gamble whoever you bring into the job.

Managers that guarantee success do not exist and anyone that
has done particularly well is in a job long term, and they are
rare as hens teeth.

We either go for potential and give a guy a chance or experience
and either way your tossing a coin and praying its the right call.

The only thing you do know in football is when it feels right to get
shut of a manager and anything else your in the hands of the gods
to be honest.

We just need a break.

they sacked george graham because of the bungs scandal not because of poor results and bruce rioch got the job not wenger.
it was rioch who signed bergkamp which is often forgotten. wenger inherited a great back four, a solid keeper, a very good goalscorer (ian wright) and a great player in bergkamp when he took the job.

where is this from mate?
klopp would be a great signing for FSG, even if it went wrong people would say that it looked a good move at the time and they did well to get him from dortmund in the first place.
you can still look ambitious even if you fail

Sorry should have explained. I have a mate who is originally from the UK but moved to the US to take up a job in the media industry. Although his job is not sports related, he does occasionally come across rumours before they get printed in the UK press (Kenny leaving, and apparently on bad terms). It’s not information he has got directly so it wouldn’t be a surprise if it turned out to be complete nonsense.

You would be fuming if we proposed taking a manager from the J League so it was very much
a gamble despite Wengers early work at Monaco.

All Wigan can do is survive and thats their achievement, they simply dont have the finance or
resources to go beyond that.

Success in football is relevant to circumstance and if Wigan stay up thats equivalent to us
reaching the top 4 places, which we failed to do by the way.

Anyway Im not sure Martinez will take the job now, and there may be a surprise appointment
so its certainly going to be an interesting and exciting week ahead.

much certain  he will be staying there and is not coming to Liverpool.

If he had been appointed manager at Anfield the press conference would
surely be there with Fenway alongside their man.

I'm afraid I don't agree. Why would he be holding a press conference at Wigan to announce he's staying? Surely just a public statement to that effect would be enough if he had turned down Liverpool. As another blogger has suggested he may not even be at the press conference which suggests that this is over one way or another.

At the very least I reckon he's decided to move on from Wigan and will either announce he's looking for a new challenge or that he's joining Liverpool and will be meeting FSG for further meetings to finalise things. I very much doubt whether we'll now get the big name we wanted this looks over sorry but that's how I see it.

Dave Whelan is loving the attention and if Martinez is staying he will take great pleasure
in annoucing it to the world via a press conference.

He will be like the cat that got the cream if his Roberto turns down Liverpool to stay at
Wigan make no mistake.

Yes he'll be at the press conference but will Martinez? Isn't the point that Whelan will be like the cat that got the cream if Martinez does get appointed at Liverpool because he knows that Martinez isn't on the level of say Klopp, Rijkaard or Deschamps?

It seems to me that all his statements to the press etc. over the last ten days have demonstrated that he's revelling in the fact that Liverpool's owners want Martinez as manager. All his quotes about the boardroom being lonely and empty when Liverpool played Wigan at the JJB in December and how much he's always admired Liverpool.

I suspect there may be another twist to all of this including Martinez getting the DOF position rather than the team job (which I read this morning somewhere) and that in the end FSG may yet emerge from all of this looking stronger than they did a couple of weeks ago.

The press and various news outlets. There's something curious about the timing of Tuesday and the fact that Whelan has said he wants an answer one way or the other from Martinez by Thursday. Could it be that FSG have issued their own ultimatum to Martinez and that even if doesn't get the Liverpool job or DOF at Anfield he'll walk away from Wigan anyway?

So it's just the media then ? Have either club said anything about a press conference being  announced ?

Which news outlets are announcing this press conference ?

Have people not realised that the press do not have the first clue about what is going with our current situation and are just churning out rumour after rumour and so far they are so far away from any truth

Andy Hunter isn't usually wrong though I wonder who his source is.
