Jose snag alerts Kop
LIVERPOOL will hold fire on moving for a new boss until Jose Mourinho’s future is confirmed.
And that could grant a brief stay of execution for Gerard Houllier, even though he is still heading for the Anfield exit door.
Porto boss Mourinho has been lined up to replace Claudio Ranieri at Chelsea but a last-minute snag has put the Liverpool board on red alert.
He wants a bigger say than Ranieri over who arrives at Chelsea. Roman Abramovich does not agree, though, with some of the names the potential new manager is suggesting.
Mourinho, 40, is the hottest young coach in Europe, having led Porto to the Champions League final and Portuguese title.
Now Liverpool are prepared to bide their time until his destination becomes clearer.
Houllier, while insisting he is planning for next season, has admitted privately he is stunned by recent developments and cannot understand why his neck is on the block having steered Liverpool to fourth in the Premiership.
He argues that he remains on course and that only the superior spending power of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United has given them such an advantage over the Reds.
Chairman David Moores has been tight-lipped and refused to give any hints to close pals at a function on Wednesday evening.
Chief executive Rick Parry is also refusing to comment other than to confirm a decision on Houllier is unlikely over the next 48 hours.
Liverpool would turn to Valencia’s Rafael Benitez, Celtic’s Martin O’Neill or Charlton’s Alan Curbishley if Mourinho settles his differences and goes to Stamford Bridge.
Benitez, like Mourinho, is one of the new brigade of young bosses challenging the old guard.
His team have just lifted the Spanish title, and on Wednesday beat Marseille 2-0 to win the UEFA Cup.
Crucially, Benitez also has his supporters inside Anfield — and the prospect of playing under him or Mourinho could have a major influence in the futures of Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard.
