While I know there are some class candidates in Europe, I still prefer someone who has already been in cauldron of Premier league (excluding Porto Prince because he is a *****) which is why I rather have Rafa back. A couple of people have thrown Paul Lambert's name up now and I must admit its a good shout when compared to some of other names including Martinez which have been bandied about.
Oh well excitement of chase continues but I expect it will be anti climatic as well
As for Whelan well, I give him some credit as owner who trying to do to everything to keep his manager at his club without alienating him by using the media.

Both Bob and Joe were promoted from within - the same as Kenny was.
Martinez has been able to spend some money in the market - as I said earlier he broke Wigans transfer record on a guy who player 11 games in total. Martinez's win percentage is around 29% ? That is very poor.

Both positions should be filled before the weekend with Matthias Sammer (Sporting Director) and Jurgen Klopp (Manager) impressing during the initial stages.

None of that guarantees succcess at the highest levels though does it? I'm sure a lot of Valencia supporters felt the same way about Rafa Benitez when he became Valencia manager. Nothing was guaranteed with a manager who beforehand had only won a Segunda league title with Tenerife.
Martinez spent £6.5m on a footballer from Argentina who was scoring goals for fun in the Argentine league. Big deal, how many poor signings did Rafa make as our manager? How many poor signings has Wenger and Fergie made? Reyes was a massive failure and likewise with Berbatov at United. United will lose around 95% of the fee paid for Berbatov. Just look at the good signings Martinez has made at Wigan manager. Jordi Gomez isn't a bad little player, Victor Moses is a decent enough striker, Al-Habsi is a good keeper and Mohamed Diame isn't a bad midfielder either.
Roberto Martinez is a gamble like any manager and it can go one of two ways! We've appointed managers in the past based on their success at other clubs and places and that hasn't brought as much success as we'd like.

after finishing 6th, 7th and 8th in consecutive seasons appointing a perennial relegation dodging manager is a bold step by FSG.
if it doesnt come off they are going to leave themselves open to a lot of criticism and even ridicule

And if it does come off and we do exceptionally well next season then people will be saying "that's a fantastic appointment". It's a gamble, but then appointing the likes of Ancelotti and Capello isn't a cast-iron recipe for successs.

where is this from mate?
klopp would be a great signing for FSG, even if it went wrong people would say that it looked a good move at the time and they did well to get him from dortmund in the first place.
you can still look ambitious even if you fail

no, but by appointing a big name most people will say `good try but for whatever reason it didnt work out`
you appoint a relegation dodger and it doesnt work out people will say `wtf were they thinking?`

Why do you care about what other people think?

I don't but it's what I'm thinking! When you're appointing a manager you want someone players want to play for
