We play tonight though so surely anything we're going to do will have to be done sooner rather than later?

It doesnt seem to be as straightforward a deal as we'd like. Its a bit of a 3 way thing with Everton needing to sign Jelavic first then negotiating a Pienaar-Saha swap that would then allow us to sign Defoe from Tottenham.
Seems like a good deal for both Spurs and Everton. Spurs get rid of Pienaar who cant get a game, Everton bring in a striker and a wide player to replace 2 inconsistent players in their books. Spurs get a pile of cash and empty up wage space while bringing in a decent backup forward. I hear Spurs are also in the market for a big signing and this might be their only way of financing it.
Regarding us though, it will be interesting to see how Defoe fits in the side if we do indeed sign him. Cant see us starting him, Suarez and Bellamy in the side at the same time. And where would that leave Carroll ?
A good finisher no doubt but I'd only take him if it was a loan deal or a 10mill or less buy.
