Andy Carroll signs for West Ham

The Premiership - General Discussion

Benny The Noon wrote:I'm guessing it's easier to point the blame at Carroll when last night he was actually ok , he was showin for the ball to feet, controlling it and passing it off , dragging their cb's around , winning a lot of knock ons and actually getting his shot on target as opposed to bit Suarez and Bellamy who had shockers.

And I would of thought people by now would of realised there is no such thing as a best 11 ?! How many seasons now have teams means rotating and restin players ? Its a squad game and clubs looking for a best 20 now not 11 .

Maxi, Kuyt, Downing all deserve to start instead of him. Carroll is pathetic when he starts, he's a lot better when he is used as an impact sub, I think that much is obvious.

Carroll was ok compared to the incredibly low standards he has set for himself.  Suarez and Bellamy were poor compared to the high standards we've come to expect from them.

I think Carroll is sh1t and the sooner he is off-loaded the better chance we stand of securing a top 4 finish....if he plays we haven't got a cat in hells chance.....makes Sean Dundee look half decent in retrospect

Suarez made a brilliant run and pulled it back for the donkey who took an air shot.

I suggest anyone who thinks Carroll did "ok" (i know no one does its only a defensive ploy) avoid reading the tabloids today. Hes a hopeless player with no pedigree.. he has never done a thing in his career to suggest 10million plus player. I wish Hodgson had signed him, then we'd be shot of him sooner.

The most striking thing for me is Kenny's reaction when his name is mentioned in interviews.. he clearly hates the subject as his face lowers and the tone in his voice is downbeat. The Liverpool echo has stated there are people within the club who question this signing... i'd like to know the culprits that don't.

Pass and move is alien to Carroll...and tbh its unfair to put him in this impossible environment. I'd equate it to sending an average student to study at Cambridge. Newcastle was his level... long balls constantly pumped into the box..very direct, and very little football played.. thats where he will get his 13/14 goals per season. A team of Suarez, Bellamy, Maxi, Adam.. they want to pass and move, one-twos, quick interchanging... this is not the big cumbersome leggy fellas environment. The worst thing is he ruins us when we play, the slick fluid play we displayed at Fulham last season.. we looked a different team last night (same i saw against Spurs when the anonymous big fella was picked).

19 games

that is all he has played for us with

I bet you all loved the fella when he scored the winner against the BS or the goals against City .

Give the lad a chance - he destroyed defences last season before he got injured - he is currently on a steep learning curve and needs time

As for tabloids ?!?! who gives a :censored: what they say - since when did Liverpool fans start taking the words of a tabloid or any newspaper as gospel

And as for Kenny rolling his eyes at a mention of the lad maybe he is sick of people questioning him or the lad and wishes some people just give him some time to regain his form and confidence .

He is a young lad who needs to mature and develop and our management have confidence in him so maybe we should trust that management , and let him and the team develop . Last night he actually provided a lot of good link up play and won a lot more headers against Hangeland than many other players would - the service into him was shocking as was the set piece delivery .

Benny, you are right, Carroll has had 19 games and I struggle to remember anything in any of those games that gives me a glimmer of hope that there is a footballer waiting to be unleashed. He is sh!t.............I very rarely make such proclaimations ....over the years I have defended players against some vehement criticism from newkit members and fans at the ground,  because I felt they just had their scapegoats who took the blame for all our woes....ie Kuyt , Lucas etc ...these players had ability and a willingness to give 100% and looked like a footballer....Carroll is awful and I wouldn't be surprised if his Anfield career is shorter than Eric Meijer's......If we had paid buttons for him last January, he'd be packed off to Blackburn come the New Year but sadly for £35million that would be a bitter pill to swallow for Kenny and the owners...perhaps.

When a player has just signed.. usually there is some excitement, a sense of *cant wait to see how he does*... i cant ever recall a more downbeat reaction to fans when we signed this no pedigree donkey;

neil wrote:wtf 35million?? madness, worth 12

p_i_n_g_u wrote:£35 million is what David Villa cost...and we're going to spend this on a relitively un-proven injured striker with a history of off-field issues..very odd.

Kukilon wrote:Simply awesome? I'm ashamed to support this club if thats the case. 35 million is wasting 20 million to much. I'd rather see us wait until the summer.

mramo wrote:This is simple waste of cash!! I hope he is not signed for this price! I hope the deal breaks down until at least the summer when his valuation drops. He is not worth £35m. I would have taken Llorente, or Kun Aguero (tho he's signed a new contract). Andy will have a lot to live up to & a massive pressure on his back! If he does not deliver the goods on a longer term, then NESV (FSG) will have a lot of questions to answer.

Hardly the reactions from people over a player who had, according to a lone defensive voice, "destoyed defences". To me hes an inferior Niall Quinn. Newcastle United were astonished at this transfer, "I'm staggered just like the rest of Newcastle fans," said Alan Shearer. "Carroll signing is a massive gamble.. It's an incredible amount of money, you have to say that, for a guy who's scored - what is it? - 14 goals and had half a season in the Premier League", every media outlet in disbelief, is everyone else wrong and the man who sanctioned the signing right?

As far as im concerned the major problem was that FSG know f**k all about football, they are new, raw, naive, and thus sanctioned this bizarre, embarrassing signing (possibly thinking this would appease the fans having just seen Torres depart). I was for one was depressed on transfer deadline day. I'd have been very happy indeed with the 50 million added to the summer transfer kitty.. my excitement toward the summer would have build.. rather than be spiked instantly with this shocking transfer. The fee is embarrassing yes, but for me the major embarrassment has nothing to do with the fee, its the standard of player that we signed. August 2009 he was on the open market for £2 million pounds sterling. 1 season in the 2nd tier, then 5 months in the prem winning flick ons for hoofball newcastle, and we fork out 35 million on a player not one of us had given a second look prior to this scandalous transfer. There is no pedigree. And that is the most damning fact of all.

As has been said before Crouch took some time to settle in and came good in the end. Lucas has been here since 2007, made 183 appearances and has only come good this year.
Carroll is not going in january, and maybe even not at the end of the season, so all those who are moaning are only putting more pressure on KK and the team which will eventually take its toll.

Its hard for me to say this but Benny I agree totally.. (thats twice now)

He is a young lad with absolute mountains of potential.  As Kenny has said many times he has been signed for 5 years not 5 weeks, months or whatever!

Crouch put in an appearance every game...just didn't get on the score sheet.
Lucas has been our best player for the last 2 and a half years and put in a performance in most games before that, but there were a few so blinkered to his indifferent start they failed to see he had ability....Carroll is not a footballer, has shown no ability to do anything except replicate the "falling off a bar stool" routine at every opportunity....he is a fu*king useless and a major concern for the development of out team......if last nights performance by Carroll can be interpreted as ok, then we are when and truly stuffed...

Get be behind...fu1k that, he will fall over and squash me! :D

Im not going to go into the Lucas debate save to say he was sh'ite for longer than he wasnt and he couldnt get any worse, yet people gave him years to improve. Fair enough.
Carroll has yet to hit his stride and become a player who can cause serious damage. He has shown glimpses of it but I agree it is not good enough. KK has a serious problem with him but I dont think calling him sh'ite or useless helps us. In fact it gives all our enemies great joy to see supporters arguing over an LFC player

Its plain to see he has potential, it really isnt hard to see it.  I see it and more importantly the people who run our club see it.

There are plenty of players who are not playing great in our team at the moment, including our golden boy Luis Suarez, who has the lowest shots on target in the Premiership at the moment.  However nobody seems to have a problem with him at the moment.

I want to support all the players and believe that Keny knows more about our players than we do

what potential? Thats a nothing answer. Ngog has potential, Insua has potential, for years we heard Emile Heskey has potential (our best period when Heskey was at the club was when we displaced him with Anelka in Jan 2002 and for the next 5 months destroyed teams.. Leeds 4-0, Ipswich 6-0 and 5-0, Newcastle 3-0, and finished 2nd)

This is a baseless assessment. This "potential" can be labelled at everyone. To have baseless hope on a player with no pedigree is appalling. Hes 23 in 6 weeks, is he magically going to show something that no one has ever seen from him?

He made his debut over 5 years ago and (removing his year in the 2nd tier) he has 18 goals in the Premiership (4 of those with us). But the worst thing is he CAN become a player who gets 13 or 14 per season AT THE DETRIMENT to the entire team. For him to get those 13 to 14 goals means us playing long ball, swinging in crosses. Totally against the pass and move ethos, totally alien to Suarez, Maxi, Bellamy and co. who play the ball on the deck, totally alien to trophy winning teams of the last 25 years. We are accomodating a player, and style, that makes us worse, and makes any chance of titles go out the window. Possession is king, carving up opponents with fluid play is the method any top team aspires. This is also why the signing makes no sense, hes not a Kenny Dalglish player (pre his Newcastle Andreas Andersson signing of course).

And as for criticising our "golden boy" Suarez, the desperation has sunk to new levels. He is virtually man of the match in every game we play. He carves up opponents for fun and only yesterday TWICE pulled the ball back for the donkey.
