such a shame rob jones had to retire so early due to injury. if he'd stayed fit gary neville would have about 50 less england caps than he actually has

:nod

We signed him from 4th division Crewe, in his first season with us he was picked for England.

A great prospect, career blighted by injuries but when fit one of the best FB's around.

Had to retire at only 27  :(

A brief reminder Liverpool v Leeds 1993

What is wrong with some people on here.

Firstly 20 years ago = 1991, that means forget about Barnes, Beardsley and Souness (FFS :D )
Secondly you cannot include homegrown players as "brought in"

My pick of the top ten best signings since 2001 -

Redknapp - A Dalglish signing in 1991, club captain, great player but unlucky with injury. Lower league signing (Bournmouth) to international regular.

Hyypia - Arguably the best centre back we have had in the last 20 years

McCallister - Such an impact in such a short time frame, performed a role that essentially allowed Gerrard to develop into the player he is today.

Murphy - Another lower league signing (Crewe) that became a firm favourite with the Anfield faithful. Fans player of the season twice over Gerrard.

Hamann - Single handedly changed the game in Instanbul allowing Gerrard the freedom to influence as he did best. Maybe Lucas can become the same reliable player?

Alonso - Nothing needs to be said.

Reina - Until Reina we went from calamity to calamity with keepers.

Kuyt - Took a couple of years to get the player we recognise today. Workhorse, gives everything.

Torres - I despise him for the way he left. Regardless he set Anfield alight with his 81 goals in such a short timeframe.

Suarez - Setting the club alight alot like Torres did. No one though we get better than Keegan until Dalglish came in. Lets hope history repeats itself.

Semantics mate, I focused on the best buys and most difficult to replace.

Nothing to do with semantics, the remit was "brought in".

I agree with SCS, I won't include homegrown in my list

Not in particular order:

Gary Mac
Luis Garcia
Hamann
Alonso
Hyypia
Torres
Suarez
Reina
Riise
Mascherano

If we limit it to the last 20years, my list would look something like this:

1- Hyypia
2- Torres
3- Alonso
4- McAllister
5- Hamann
6- Litmanen
7- Luis Garcia
8- D.Murphy
9- Redknapp
10- F.Aurelio (funny one because hes not as good as the others on the list (neither is Garcia arguably) but im a huge fan of his)

A no doubt skillfull player who in the autumn of his career played less than  50 games for Liverpool and you have him as one of your faves   ???

I guess Pete Best was also one of your favourite Beatles  :D

Its not about appearances or skill though is it ? All about your favorite players and for me he was a joy to watch..

Personally cant understand the inclusion of Enrique and even Suarez given the fact that they've only been at the club a few months but there you go...

Markus Babbel would have been another one if he hadn't got that mystery illness. He was immense in the treble season. Nearly got double figures from fullback. Free aswell.
