No, it's probably because they've seen more quality from Adam than they have from Downing

On a consistent basis ? How many times have people actually seen Adam play ? Twice against us ?

How many times have you actually seen Downing play ?

You're not slow to tell us how good he is and according to you he's played for Villa these last three seasons.

G/F's cousin works there so have managed to see Villa a few times .

Villa fans voted him there best player and Blackpool fans voted David Vaughan as there best player - Adam had a very big dip in form after jan .

Adam brings us squad depth - Downing brings us something crucial into the first 11 .

We have seen plenty guys do well in their first season in the prem then disappear as well . Adam won't be in the starting line up regulary where as Downing will .

Over the last 6 months we’ve spent over 75 million....and (according to the press) we’re still in the hunt for a left back and central defender. So that figure could break the 100 million mark easily....

Are we over spending? Are the players we’re signing worth the cash we’re paying?

Personally i think we’re are...maybe it’s our new policy of buying home grown or the fact the other clubs know we’re looking to improve, but we’re defiantly spending more than we should. Don’t get me wrong, i think our new players are improving the squad and we’ll be challenging....I just fear the silly season is descending  upon Anfield and we're getting ripped off on a massive level on our transfers

Yes we are getting ripped off but only because every club out there knows that Liverpool want young or youngish English players, so they hold out for more. Funny thing is we go and pay the ransoms that are demanded for some players who are only worth half of their transfer fee.

One of the positives I can pull from the English signings right now is that the players look like fighters who should carry on the never say die attitude that we have been used to in the past, unlike some foreign imports that tend to go off before the use by date expires.

The prices look high but when you consider the amounts we paid for Keane, Acquilani and Johnson, all £20m marks, its not that far off. Carroll was the only one that sent a shockwave really but Suarez must have almost doubled in value in 6 months so weve covered that already. I wouldnt so much look at the money we spend but how the books are balanced as well and right now we have done really well getting in 6 good players for just shy of £50m overall net spend.

Not sure how many of you know this, but Adam got very sick  in March I believe.  He was out for something like a month with a crazy sickness he picked up and they couldn't really figure out why it was so bad.  He had also just served a suspension.  I believe he missed 4 straight games.

He was out for a month, came back and clearly wasn't the same player as he was still recovering from the sickness he had.  That's when Blackpool started to really drop points all the time and he wasn't doing much at all.  It was really April that killed him with no goals and 1 assist in 5 games- April is the month everybody played their most games.  Before he'd gotten sick and after the second half of the season, he had 6 goals and 2 assists, which isn't bad at all.

He finished the season off with a goal a game and 1 assist against spurs, bolton and manure.

He wasn't playing as well, but it just goes to show how much Blackpool depended on him.  He wasn't playing at his best and they were relegated because of it.

Don't get to watch many other matches over here like I used to in England. So I must fess up and say I haven't seen him player for Villa

Do I have misconceptions about the bloke and are they outdated at that?

I'm in the exact same boat.  I've never seen the lad play for Villa so my gut reaction to the signing is based on watching him during his Boro days.  He was a decent prospect then but never a world beater and I would have had reservations if we were in for him then.  My hope is that he has moved up a level (or two) at Villa and that he'll kick on even more under Kenny's tutelage.  We'll soon find out.

Thanks for the dough! :D Much more fun to pay for club merchandize and the like when all your money doesn't go to servicing the clubs debt.

i feel that we shouldn't spend so much now, rather save it for next season when we qualify for the champions league. at least then there'll be a wider range of players who would want to come to us as we're playing on the biggest stage. of course, it'll be nice to have players wanting to play for us with or without European football but a footballer's career is short and no one can be faulted for having ambitions. it would be unreasonable to think otherwise as what is entertainment to us, is their career.

what we desperately need now is a clear out of at least 10 players. El Zhar's contract is ending next season so surely it wouldn't cost much to release him? Degen was a mistake from the very start and should be sold or released. the same should apply to Poulsen, Jovanovic, Jones, Amoo and Aurelio. once that is sorted, we'll have cover for every position though it would be nice to have a stronger player at left back such as Baines or Figueroa. IMO, Spearing and Pacheco should be sold as well but i doubt they would be leaving in the near future.

GK - Reina, Doni
DEF - Carra, Agger, Johnson, Kelly, Skrtel, Flanagan, Robinson, Insua, Kyrgiakos, Wilson
MID - Gerrard, Meireles, Aquilani, Adam, Henderson, Lucas, Spearing, Shelvey
AM - Downing, Kuyt, Cole, Maxi, Pacheco
ST - Carroll, Suarez, Ngog

that's 28 players, 12 of them British born. plus there are others such as Sterling, Wisdom and Suso in the youth teams.

hence, i feel unless our next signing is a defender, we need not buy any more players, but we have to sell a lot of them.

We need to spend to improve the squad to enable us to get into the top 4 then look again for more investment next summer - get the squad up to a solid platform which we seem to be doing , then have additions to it each summer .

We will still buy a left back - not sure about a CB .

Spearing won't be sold as he is the back up to Lucas .

We need a LB and a CB and that's quite obvious the more we watch.

I'm starting to question letting eggnogg go.. He's done well in the preseason.  I know it's been garbage teams, but in front of the goal he doesn't really miss.  In China he scored and it was wrongly counted out as well.

Agreed .

If Agger stays fit we can probably get by without a new CB this season but the LB position is a real weakness. We've got lads that can play there but no nailed on starter.

I gave a shout for Leighton Baines a while back , pity that while we're tossing money about like confetti we couldn't get some one of that calibre, hopefully it's something the club are still working on.

That's a big IF tho.  Agger can't stay fit 3 games straight or he'd be one of the better CB's in the league.  I just don't believe it's going to happen.

I think everybody's jumped on the Baines bandwagon by now.

Think you might be right as far as Agger is concerned.
