Aston Villa are ready to rival Liverpool in a bid for Preston defender Sean St Ledger.

Villa scouts have watched the Republic of Ireland international regularly while Liverpool assistant boss Sammy Lee has also run the rule over the 25-year-old.

St Ledger has recaptured his form and fitness after a difficult past 18 months where he saw a move to Middlesbrough collapse and tentative inquiries from Celtic come to nothing.

However, Preston are struggling to shed their debts and will be willing to listen to offers in January with an asking price of around £4million.

Villa manager Gerard Houllier knows he has an advantage over his former club Liverpool as St Ledger is a Villa fan and has partnered Richard Dunne at international level.

Houllier said: 'If we spot a good international player who can add something, we'll take him. We will have one or two coming in January.'

Fantastic news... if we can have him and Carlton Cole in the January window I'll be made up :lookaround

I have only seen Afellay a couple of times, he was playing in the national team and he seemed very gifted, a natural wide player. Don't know if he can keep up for an entire season.

As for Mario Gomez, everytime I saw him (for Germany or for Bayern Munchen) he was poor - poor touch, missed sitters, things like that. That being said I have not watched him play more than 5 times, so the sample is not large enough to be able to make conclusions.

Against the Romanian champions, CFR Cluj, who had a stinker (so they told, I did not watch the game).

I have seen the goals and they were nothing spectacular.

Think Gomez is too slow for this league personally.  Would much rather see Vucinic here instead.

Some good suggestions there.
Might be slightly too expensive though.

I would go for Signori if possible.

i can remember there was a rumuor at the time that kk wanted to sign signori for newcastle but wasnt allowed the funds and one of many reasons why he walked. Probably just papertalk tho. Simone was a pocket rocket for A.C Milan great instinctive striker with a great shot on him.

I'd rather go for someone younger, someone like Montella. His aeroplane celebration was class :).

Liverpool set to pounce on £7m French destroyer.
According to mirrorfootball.co.uk, Liverpool’s new sporting director Damien Comolli is set to raid former club St Etienne for captain Blaise Matuidi.
Comolli left the Ligue 1 side this week with the brief of “identifying new and exciting talent” for the Reds.
The Frenchman thinks Matuidi, 23, fits the bill and could make a £7m bid for him in January.
