New England Sports Ventures (NESV) and Liverpool FC are pleased to announce the appointment of Damien Comolli as Director of Football Strategy for Liverpool FC.

NESV Principal Owner John Henry said today: "Damien has a proven track-record of identifying exciting young footballing talent and we are delighted that he has agreed to join Liverpool. Working closely with Roy Hodgson and the coaching staff, I know he will make a valuable contribution to strengthening the Club and the squad as we move forward.

"Today's announcement is just the first step in creating a leadership group and structure designed to develop, enhance and implement our long-term philosophy of scouting, recruitment, player development and all of the other aspects necessary to build and sustain a club able to consistently compete at the highest level in European football.

"We intend to be bold and innovative. We will not rest until we have restored Liverpool Football Club to the greatness Liverpool fans expect."

Roy Hodgson added: "I am looking forward to working with Damien whom I have known for many years. We are engaged in an exciting project here and he will bring a lot to the table. We all want to see moves to strengthen the squad and support player development over the next few years. John Henry and I are totally united in delivering on that ambition."

Damien Comolli said:"I am delighted to be joining Liverpool and look forward to working with John and Roy.  I think we all realise there is a big job ahead, but we all share the vision that John has for rebuilding the club and bringing back the success that the supporters deserve."

Don't really klnow much about this Comolli guy. All I know is that he had a mixed record in terms of his purchases at Spurs. For every Berbatov there was a Zokora for example.

aye.

He over saw the purchase of a Mr Gareth Bale.

BUT also spent £16.5m on Darren Bent, £17m on David Bentley and then there was also Alan Hutton, Kevin-Prince Boateng, Giovanni dos Santos, Adel Taarabt and Younes Kaboul

i'd say no, but he's an improvement over what we had.

This is something about football that confuses me.
The scouting i mean.

Does that mean the manager takes scouts recommendations without taking a proper look themselves ?
Like that Bebe for united ?

If i was a manager i would use the scouts for their suggestions but wouldnt sign ANY player until i had then formed my own opinion.

I am sure most would take a look.
But i bet there are lots of players signed based only on scouting reports.
Ferguson stated that he hadnt seen Bebe play.
He cost a decent amount of money didnt he ?

I bet Rafa had never seen Dossena play  :D

I think it would be stupid if a manager signed a player without seeing him play.    The book ends with the manager all the time.

obviously the manager has to check the player and make sure he can fit into the system the team uses?

You would think so but they do definitely go on scouting reports at times.
I am certain of that.

Reminds me of when Shanks saw Ray Kennedy play for the  first time after we'd bought him and said to Paisley 'They shot the wrong on!'
