If we manage to get a striker like Llorente and perhaps A. Young in the january transfer window we will be in top 3 with no problems at all IMO .

alan nixon in todays mirror is reporting that rh flew to holland on saturday to watch psv's affelay and toivoinen.
he is also saying we are interested in nzogbia.
darren lewis claims also in todays paper that karl heinz rumennigge has waded into the claims that mario gomes is on his way to anfield.he told german tv its difficult to talk to van gaal because he doesent accept the opinion of other people, gomez,di michelis and tymoschuk have all been frozen out by van gaal.he praised the players for their part in the 4.2 win over freiburg on friday."dimichelis scores the first goal, although he is supposedly free to leave," gomez who netted the second, supposedly should be in liverpool by now".

have to admit i dont know a lot about the above mentioned players, but does anyone think if we signed toivonen, affelay and gomes we would be capable of mounting a challenge on the top 4?.

Why would PSV sell both their captain and their main striker? I think both will be very good for us. I'm not too fond of Mario Gomez he seems to lack intensity and intelligence... that's why Klose was always the main striker for Germany... Gomez at 25 is still quite young though... but I much prefer Toivonen...

Carlton Cole will probably be sold in January. Dont really like him but I dont think that we can do much better right now... but really to be honest I'd rather play N'Gog than him.

It seems that we're being linked with Wright - Philips again. Always thought that he's a good player but I'm not really sure about him now. I mean he is getting kind of old and im not sure that we really need him now unless some of our players is leaving.

And Gomez was a great player just 2-3 years ago when he played in Stutgart I really liked him at the time he was probably the best player in the league then. Dont know what is happening to him in Bayern now, he really sucks at the momment. But I belive is this guy's talent and ability and maybu all he needs is a change. He wont come cheep though. Bayern bought him for about 30 mil just an year ago and he probably has no less than 3 years left on his contract.

Not by a long chance ,Affelay is talented but seems a bit like babel ,not very smart...

Gomes is a big clumsy striker..

Priceless from the Daily Mail:

Aston Villa are ready to rival Liverpool in a bid for Preston defender Sean St Ledger.

Villa scouts have watched the Republic of Ireland international regularly while Liverpool assistant boss Sammy Lee has also run the rule over the 25-year-old.

St Ledger has recaptured his form and fitness after a difficult past 18 months where he saw a move to Middlesbrough collapse and tentative inquiries from Celtic come to nothing.

However, Preston are struggling to shed their debts and will be willing to listen to offers in January with an asking price of around £4million.

Villa manager Gerard Houllier knows he has an advantage over his former club Liverpool as St Ledger is a Villa fan and has partnered Richard Dunne at international level.

Houllier said: 'If we spot a good international player who can add something, we'll take him. We will have one or two coming in January.'
