Lifted from the Lfc off site
Fernando Torres could feature against Arsenal on Sunday despite not playing any part in Liverpool's pre-season preparations.

The  striker returned to Melwood late following Spain's World Cup triumph and his time since then has been spent largely with the sports science team as he continues to recover from an adductor injury.

Roy Hodgson must now decide whether to throw his star striker into his first game since the final in South Africa.

The manager said: "Yes, there's a chance he could play. He's made a remarkable effort to get himself fit and ready for Premiership football. He's worked extremely hard in the two and a half weeks he's been back. I haven't ruled him out but I haven't ruled him in either.

"His chances were rightly being played down by the sports science people. They said, quite rightly, that in an ideal world he'd have a longer preparation period.

"It's quite simply a balancing job. Do we take the risk of putting him in early or do we hold him back and put him through a more strenuous pre-season programme?

"The player's feelings also have to be taken into account, so it's a delicate mixture.

"But the bottom line is yes, he could be considered for Sunday. The same goes for Pepe Reina."

Fingers crossed here ......

I wouldn't risk him...

Look at what happened when he wanted to play so much in the World Cup final and wasn't really fit...

We are going into the season with ONE top class striker - Fernando Torres.
Why is a top class club like Liverpool going into a season with ONE top class striker?
How on earth can we expect to finish in the top 4 with ONE top class striker?
Questions need to be asked to Hodgson why we have only ONE top class striker.
Really, we are lucky Torres hasn't left because of the lack of top class signings he asked for a few months ago.

Mate we will only have the funds to buy another top class striker once Mascherano is sold.

Right now we dont have much of a choice but to wait for him to go. Poulson for 6 Mill was a great piece of business by Roy because it closes the gap in our midfield and will mean that more funds will be avavilable for a striker.

Only problem is if we are looking to play 1 up top again it's going to be quite dificult to get another forward who is willing to be 2nd fiddle to torres.

I remember the season before last when kuyt was put uptop when torres was out and he bagged a fair few goals up there. 2 against wigan, aswel as hitting the bar in the same game ring a bell to me.

I'm not disagreeing with you at all, but like i said, i think in the system we have been playing the last few years it will be hard to get a top class attacker willing to join when it will always be between him and torres to start.

Kuyt, Jovanovic, N'gog, Babel can all play up there if needs be.

But hey...if we can attract a top forward then i'd quite happily eat my words.  :buttrock

I think Torres will play Sunday. Huge game for us, more than just a season opener, its a new dawn and we need to hit the ground running. Torres will start to get Anfield lifted and we should go for Arsenal and try and mark our territory early doors. We have endured enough caution now its time to be brave and fight and light the place up again.

It is indeed very risky for fitness reasons but winning the first game of the season is VERY important to gather momentum.

Just look at last season. We lost the first game and never seemed to get going until it was too late.

Birmingham last season did so well because they gained momentum and whent for like 15 games without losing.

Gather momentum from the starting line and your in for a good finish. Risk Torres

You must be joking. What gap? We have more than enough midfielders to cover any gaps. The money spent on Poulson should have been spent on a striker. And why can't we play with two strikers? If it's against a team in the bottom half, we should be going with that.

Not a question of playing second fiddle to Torres. Although if Berbatov can play second fiddle to Rooney, there should be no trouble in finding another striker. We really need another striker before the transfer window closes, or it's a repeat of last season.

???  They arent gonna fill the gap, for a start Jonjo is an attacking mid that can play centre mid. He's not a defensive mid.

Spearing just isnt good enough.

The gap would still exist

GAP

You're putting too much emphasis on the defensive midfield position. In the event of injuries, players in other positions have to be prepared to move around. I'm sure Shelvy, Aquilani or Carragher could play there if needed.

All I'm saying is there is more need for a striker than a defensive midfielder. We STILL haven't replaced Keane, yet we've replaced a player who is still here. Hodgson has got his priorities wrong.
