Markus Babbel becomes new Hertha Berlin coach May 17, 2010
BERLIN (AP) -Relegated Hertha Berlin has appointed Markus Babbel as coach and has given him a one-year contract that will be automatically extended by another season if the club gets promoted back to the Bundesliga.
Babbel succeeds Friedhelm Funkel, whose contract was not extended after the club's relegation.
A former Bayern Munich and Liverpool defender who played 51 games for Germany, Babbel was fired in December from Stuttgart, his first coaching job.
