In terms of strengthening the team and squad you're right, Alonso is far from our weakest squad player and Barny would not be a significant improvement. I'm happy for us to sell the likes of Crouch, Finnan, Riise and Pennant because we can improve on them without too much difficulty. Those kind of players should be out the door before we start shipping out players like Alonso.
I mentioned before that Rafa signed twelve players that have left already, the most expensive of those was Luis Garcia/Bellamy/Morientes - all signed at £6m. Crouch cost us £7m so will be #13 to leave in only four seasons and Alonso would be #14 and the most expensive signing to leave
Rafa's most expensive signings.
1. £21.0m Torres
2. £17.0m Mascherano
3. £11.5m Babel
4. £10.5m Alonso
5. £10.0m Kuyt
6. £7.0m Crouch
7. £6.7m Pennant
8. £6.0m Luis Garcia
9. £6.0m Morientes
10. £6.0m Bellamy
11. £6.0m Reina
12. £6.0m Skrtel
Barny would be 2nd/3rd which is tragic, half his top ten have been, or are about to be, sold. It's a shame we didn't spend a bit more in the first place and sign some players that would have been first teamers for years, not some hit and miss signings that are offloaded - most within two seasons of signing (Luis Garcia lasted 3, Sissoko 2.5 as the longest of the dirty dozen)

Owzat, you miss one vital factor from your table, time. You need to put purchase date against each player and plot cash availability by period.
You´ll see the cheaper lads (bar the obvious) came in over one period, the most expensive in another. Alonso is the odd man out becuase clearly Rafa splashed out mega bucks to buy him when we didnt have the cash available.
It puts a different perspective on it and according to the stats, you CAN say that over time Rafa has had considerably more money made available to him and has been willing to fork out greater values on higher class players - bearing in mind also the money paid out for the youngsters which has also increased the non first team wage bill.
We´re moving forward.

Sabre wrote:"I have talked to him, he knows my ideas and he knows why. So we will try to find a solution for him, for us, and the best for the club."
In my country this means, I wouldn't mind him to leave, but not for low teens. I don't think he'll stay Nanny.
But if he stays, I'm sure he'll fight hard for a place and will pose serious competition for his team mates. Alonso is the kind of player that knows being on the bench without much noises, he'll just wait for his chance and during the year that chance will come.
At least he won't leave at any price, which was my main concern.
