I don't think there are too many teams out there that would/could pay £15 million or so for Alonso at the moment tbh.

Best if we drop the Barry deal now and concentrate on trying to bring in the players we really need if we are to progress. Whether Alonso will be happy to stay after recent events is another question, presumably Rafa will have to do some fast talking to get him back on board and happy again.

Don't know s@int, I think Rafa has been given more money to secure Keane and Barry.

I dont know if this is realiable or not

RAFA GIVEN TRANSFER FUNDS

I heard about the £20million a while ago Metalhead, I'm still not sure if its true or not. I pm'ed someone to see if they could find out but they haven't got back to me yet.

Have you any idea when we receive payments for CL and also Prem tv money?

Reason I am asking is I have heard we will be getting £20million transfer funds on the 26th of July, and I honestly can't see H&G putting their hands in their pockets, so they are my only ideas where it could be coming from...... if its true?

Xabi Alonso still set to leave Liverpool
Jul 15 2008 by David Prentice, Liverpool Echo

XABI ALONSO is still heading for the Anfield exit door, despite Juventus finally abandoning their chase for his signature.

The Serie A giants unveiled a cut price alternative to Alonso yesterday in £7.4m Danish international Christian Poulsen from Seville – after baulking at the Reds’ £14m asking price.

And coach Claudio Ranieri declared that his spending on outfield players had now finished for the summer.

“All that we are missing is a goalkeeper,” he said. “I asked for two players in every position and I got them. With the new purchase we will have quality in midfield.”

The news comes as a blow to Rafa Benitez, whose summer spending plans still hinge heavily on what money he can generate from the transfer market. And Alonso will have to be sacrificed to fund those plans.

Benitez’s wheeling and dealing so far this summer has left him with a profit of around £8m, still way short of what Aston Villa are demanding for Gareth Barry.

And with Spurs striker Robbie Keane also a confirmed target, the Reds boss still needs a major injection of funds to his transfer pot.

The departure of Scott Carson should boost that fund by a further £4m today.

The goalkeeper is in talks with newly promoted Stoke City and West Brom, after both clubs had £4m bids accepted by the Reds.

Carson stayed behind from Liverpool’s training camp in Switzerland in order to stage talks with both clubs and a decision is expected today.

The Reds’ Swiss training squad, meanwhile, has been boosted by the return of Javier Mascherano, Dirk Kuyt and Nabil El Zhar ahead of tomorrow’s friendly with FC Lucerne.

The trio joined up with the training camp yesterday.

One youngster not in Switzerland is striker Kristian Nemeth, but he continues to impress at the UEFA Under-19 European Championships.

The striker scored the only goal of the game to help Hungary beat Bulgaria 1-0 in their opening game of the championships in the Czech Republic yesterday.

Including the qualifiers, it was Nemeth’s sixth goal of the competition, making him joint top scorer.

He was replaced by Liverpool team-mate Andras Simon in the 88th minute, while fellow Red Peter Gulacsi was outstanding in goal.

Meanwhile, Mikel San Jose played the full 90 minutes as holders Spain went down 2-1 in their opening match to Germany.
                                    ------------------------------------------

Sounds like Rafa still needs to sell Alonso if he is going to complete his transfer business

That might very well be true, but tbh this is a very weak article from the Echo imo. Sure, the headline says that Alonso will still be leaving, but there are no quotes or anything backing this up in the article itself. Actually it doesn't even mention that much about Alonso (except the first line, which basically just repeats the headline!), the writer just seems to be deducing that Alonso must still be on his way out due to the prices of the other players we are after, and the money needed to pay for them. Now he might very well be right on this account, but still it doesn't justify a headline like that in any way imo, as the journo just seems to be speculating (or thinking out loud if you will). Weak journalism me thinks ???

With all due respect to the Turkish league , surley xabi will see that only as a step backwards for his career.
