Total different role he plays for us than Essien does for Chelsea. If you took Alonso out and put Essien in our team would need to alter its style of play!
Essiens game is more about aggression and physically attacking(hes more Gerrard than Alonso IMO),Xabis is more about skill and his range of passing!
I think Essien is a fantastic player but he's not the same type of player as Alonso.

Quite simply put I think Alonsos form this season compared to the last 2 is no coincidence with us finishing a lot closer! He was absolutely out of this world for us all season,a massive influence on our success...I'll be gutted if he leaves us!! :(

If you look at my post in the other Alonso thread mate, you'd see that you agree with me.

When I read this my first thought was that in regards to "Style of Play", Xabi is our style of play.  He doesn't just suit our style, he is our style.  If that makes any sense.

I won't celebrate Rafa going........ but I will be over the moon if Dalglish comes in. League within 2 years if he gets the job, AND YOU CAN QUOTE ME ON THAT.

I would agree with most of this Barry, but don't forget it the standard of his replacement that has a bearing as well mate. Lucas for Alonso is hardly a straight swop is it  :D

Even then you have to remember that our best win of the season was without Alonso (4-1 against the mancs) and Alonso didn't start in our biggest win of the season either (5-1 against Newcastle)

For me it just depends who we bring in if he goes thats the important thing. Bring in a world class player and I can't see any problem, bring in Plessis and Houston we have a problem.

We need him at the club mate if we are to move forward.Especially if we are to play the way we played in the last half of the season.FFS mate he was instrumental in all of that play.Puling the strings for all around him,a total joy to watch!

I dont see the significance of the 4-1 and 5-1 and lack of Xabi..we could say we beat big teams without Torres and Gerrard..cause we did!Only once without both if I remember right!
That does not mean we could win every week without them!

I just struggle to think of anyone we can bring in that will fit our system better than he does!

As for Lucas for Alonso..simple get Lucas out and bring in Gaz Baz with Babel as part of the deal..then we can swap Alonso for Barry if needed! But Alonso should not leave to bring Barry!! :no
