Just a question, why do Real want him if they already have Diarra for that position? Or do they also play with 2 holding MF's?

Barcelona battering Real yesterday (2-6 in Madrid) will surely get their wheels spinning to recruit new blood. :(

Are you talking this season?  I'm not having that--he's been immense virtually all season.  Just check out how many times .tv has given him MOTM (including yesterday, BTW).  Barry is a pale shadow of Xabi as a player and moving Xabi on to bring Barry in would be a huge step backward.  Strangely, you seem to be endorsing one of the few moves that would actually make Benitez look the mug you sometimes suggest he is.  ???

?? So you think Rafa is a mug then, look at your previous post.  :D

I did qualify my post by saying that it would have to be for a lot of money and I'm fairly certain I also said that Xabi was a great player, it's just that I think Barry would give us an extra dimension, I'd prefer to have both of them though.

Im not having a go here Hiemdell but do you really hand on heart prefer Barry over Xabi. I just cant see how . ok im a big fan of Xabi . for those who didt know  But not because of the way he looks, well that does play a tiny tiny part,  :shifty but i love him for the way he plays football, his finese ,his elegance, his class all on the ball. Having someone with the gift and talent that Xabi posses, and a player who imo would command a place is any of the top teams in the world, a player who has already proven on the international stage how sublime he is, I watch sometimes mesmorised at how he spotted that pass he played, hes thinking were its going before the ball is played to him, in my eyes the man is a genius an i dont use that phrase very often, im sorry but i dont see Barry on the same planet as Xabi, Dont get me wrong Barry is an exellent player who could do a job in the team but not at the expense of Xabi

Let's put this in perspective.  Last summer, when Barry looked like he was coming and Xabi looked to be on his way, most sane people around here were suggesting that we were pretty much replacing like for like in terms of quality if those moves happened.  This was after a season where Xabi failed to hit top form and where Barry was at the very top of his game, mind.  One year on and we're winding down a season where Xabi has been back to his imperious best and Barry's been....well, TBPH, I don't know how Barry's been because I only watch Villa when they play us. But I'd bet my house he's been no where near as good as Xabi this season.  So, why in God's name would anyone prefer to bring in Barry next season?  What could he possibly offer us that we don't already have in spades?  It's simple.  We have zero need for Gareth Barry,  He does not improve our first team and he will not be the missing piece of the puzzle that helps us win the title next year.  This whole discussion should be a non-starter.  :no

I've ALWAYS said, mate, that swapping Alonso for Barry would be a big mistake.  I said it last year when people could actually make a reasonable case for the move based on respective form and I'm saying it again now, when people can't.  Rafa dropped down several pegs in my estimation last summer with this whole saga and, like Nan, I'll be absolutely livid with him this summer if he starts it up again.  So, yes, you can quote me on this: if Rafa sells Alonso and brings in Barry this summer he is officially a mug.  :D

It would be heatbreaking though Daws. An i can see what Bob is saying an all this Barry in an Xabi is off shouldnt even have reared it head again, but its all over the place , you have a look at any of the forums an its being dissgussed, Ive even been told that the deal for Barry is done, ill wait an see, I hate it though at even the remotest chance we could even loose a player of his ability,

Right me ears are closed now Bob to anything concerning Xabi going :nod

If everyone are so great why doesn't we win the league.

Like this year for example.

Gerrard, Torres, Masch, Carra, Skrtel, Kuyt, Alonso, Reina
Hyppia, Aurelio, Babel were the players we used most of this past season.

And for some reason fans thinks like this:

Everyone of those players are great and it is because of bit part players like Voronin, Risse etc that we fail to get within distance from Manure.

What kind of logic is that?

For example everyone could see that Sissoko, Cisse were limited and just not up to the standard required in this league. But they had their moments and still even now some think they should never have been sold. Beggars belief really when you think how :censored: they were at times.

And now Alonso. He is a player with phenomenal skill, but it is just so painfully obvious he is eaten alive in this fast paced league and he just can't handle it and hasn't done it for the past couple of seasons. And still people go on about his 1st season as some kind of "love at 1st sight thing"
I don't care if a player was great if he is really poor now.
It is now that counts and if people takes of their blindfolds
they will see that Alonso hasn't done jack for a very long time and hasn't been effective at all.

Kuyt is another example who scored  3 goals(pens) as a striker for something like 23 games before we just couldn't keep him there. Still people love him because he was just so great in the 1st game vs West Ham. Pathetic I say.
He is just lacking in so many areas it's horrifying and has been pisspoor 90% of the season and still we all love Kuyt.
And a whole season doesn't count as a blip on the radar or just poor patch of form. It is genuinly rubbish, nothing more, nothing less.

It's all Voronin and Risse's fault. Blame them...   :no

I don't hate certain players and I will wish them the best when they move on, but my priority is LFC and not some player who was good once.

I do feel sorry for you. I have to conclude either:

a) You are a young person, maybe 13 years or something so you have little clue about the game or little knowledge of LFC

b) You are older but "new" to the game so you have not developed an eye for the game or an "understanding"

As a footballer Alonso is among the 5 best midfielders I have seen at Liverpool since the early 1980's.

I rate him alongside Steve McMahon, Ray Houghton, a young Ronnie Whelan and Graeme Souness.

So in what way is Alonso top 5 in the world?

His stats are abysmal the past few years, and unless
you have been blind watching Alonso rarely sprays the ball around anymore and do anything effective with the ball.

Both stats and his poor overall showings on the field shows that.

And I can only put you in one category:

Liverpool supporter who has  to fall in love with every player that plays regular 1st team football.
And how can 2 full seasons be called off form???
How long is that lie gonna hold up?
It's time to call a spade a spade.

And I'd like to see more of Lucas and Plessis as they should be able to develop and get more games next season.
I myself think 4 CM are more than enough for a season
and Lucas and Plessis must get more 1st team football
to reach their potential.

I guess we have to agree to disagree in Joaquin LFC2007.
But he was just an example.
When was the last time we had a top class winger?
We will never win without one.
And Kuyt isn't the answer, even if everyone is trying to force that belief onto themselves.
But please slate me all you want for saying certain players
have been poor this season.
I want LFC to win, and care little for sentimental :censored:
or feel sorry for players who can't perform.

If there is a need to sell to finally get someone good on the wings for a change, Alonso is one of the few players who might fetch a nice sum.

Just look back at what people said last year. I always wanted xabi to stay and I thought selling him would eclipse Souness mistake when selling Peter Beardsley.

This Penguin dude however wanted Xabi off as soon as possible, so did many others. Shame on the fools.
If football is banned in heaven. I'd rather go to hell.

I´m reading all the spanish papers and it seems that the interest on Negredo is serious. even both clubs could be negotiating.

If you ask me, I´d tell you he is a great player.
