Who was the best? ?

Personally i would go for Phil Neal, for me he was consistent and reliable and also played in 4 European cup finals and 8 league championship winning sides. A great servant to the club.

(other contenders: Ephraim Longworth, Gerry Byrne, Barry Venison, Markus Babbel)

I have to go with Phil Neal because he had it all as a modern full-back should. He could defend and he was never shy in going forward. Many attack was started down the right side, with Zico carrying the ball forward. One game he missed in 10 seasons, tremendous player..never given the credit he deserved.

I agree Owzat, Stevie Nicol was my favourite but Phil Neal did it over a long period in higher profile games. He is one hell of a boring git though........yes boss, yes boss, yes boss......

I think that Rob Jones was a great player and had it not been for his shin-splints Gary Neville wouldn't have got a Look In for England, or a Beano for that matter.....LOL  :D

Phil can also play right back but he is s##t and over rated.

He should be in over rated legends :D

Phil Neal was a truly gifted player and right out of the 'Liverpool Mould'. Stevie Nicol had a bit more flair and was a great player. I never regarded Tommy as an out and right back, he started as a 'sweeper' behind the back four and then moved into midfield protecting the back four (very effectively!) But my vote goes to someone who played with some of the great Liverpool players who started the revolution.
A quiet man - but shear class!

I reckon you should do a "best all-rounder" - the player who filled in best in most positions. I would but it seems you have a knowledge stretching further back than mine

cheers for the idea owzat, its a bit of a grey area when there were so many players who turned out in different positions - i'll give it a go!

Phil Neal is the man, although Rob Jones may have done quite well (but difficult to overcome Neal's records and achievements as Jones was playing in a declining team) if not for the injury problem which caused him to retire early.
