The Field of Anfield Road is a pinched Irish rebel song BTW.

The original song is the Fields of Athenry and is sung at Irish rugby matches and also by Celtic supporters. Liverpool fans have nicked it.  :D

yeah well celtic nicked YNWA, so i guess we are even - at least we modified it though - great song Fields of Anfield Road.

Outside the Shankly Gates
I heard a Kopite calling:
Shankly they have taken you away
But you left a great eleven
Before you went to heaven
Now it's glory round the Fields of Anfield Road

Chorus:
All round the Fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and he could play)
Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
Of the glory round the Fields of Anfield Road

Outside the Paisley Gates
I heard a Kopite calling
Paisley they have taken you away
You led the great 11
Back in Rome in 77
And the redmen they are still playing the same way

All round the Fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and he could play)
Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
Of the glory round the Fields of Anfield Road

Next match I go to I'm taking my PDA with me and getting an mp3 of it.  I need it on my mp3 player on repeat.  I love it when the crowd sing that.

We didn't nick it from Celtic: like Liverpool Celtic fans nicked it from Irish GAA and rugby supporters who travel over from Ireland to Parkhead.

I suspect that The Fields of Anfield Road originated in the couple of hundred or so Irish fans who travel to every Liverpool home game and it was adapted to suit Liverpool.

Walk into any pub in the west of Ireland at about 1.00am on a Saturday night and I'll bet you'll hear some ****** old lad singing it:

By a lonely prison wall,
I heard a young girl call:
"Michael, they have taken you away,
For you stole Trevelyn's corn,
So the young might see the morn.
Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay."
Refrain:
Low lie the fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly
Our love was on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry.

By a lonely prison wall,
I heard a young man call
"Nothing matters, Mary, when you're free
Against the famine and the crown,
I rebelled, they cut me down.
Now you must raise our child with dignity."
Refrain:

By a lonely harbor wall,
She watched the last star fall
As the prison ship sailed out against the sky
For she lived to hope and pray
For her love in Botany Bay
It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry.
Refrain

Its a bit ironic that its sung in Britain as its about a young Irish lad who is put in jail by the British and then deported to Australia.
