But if we'd done the double over United, we'd still have been five points behind Chelsea surely or am I going even more daft in me old age?
I agree though we weren't far off in some ways. We had a team which was plenty good enough to challenge for starters. We had the best striker, the best goalkeeper, the best central midfielder (attacking), the best holding midfielder, a decent defence. We had only one serious injury all season, we didn't have any players going to the African Nations Cup, we didn't sack our manager after half a dozen games, we didn't fall out of the blocks, we had a p!ss easy start to the campaign, an easy Champions League group and didn't play anybody out of the top division in the three rounds in which we competed in in the Fa Cup.
When you look at it you realise that we had a lot of things in our favour really. In the last third of the season, we pretty much picked a settled team and showed title winning form Home and Away. Unfortunately once again giving everyone else a big start while we fiddled around with the formation, the personel and the make-up of the team proved beyond us.
It'll be different this time around though. We won't make 75 changes to the team in the first fifteen matches, we won't fiddle around with the formation and we'll launch a full and bona fide title challenge. It won't though of course because of anything to do with rotation. It'll be because we've signed Deggan/the owners are being nice to everyone/we haven't had injuries (even though we inevitably will) or we haven't been unlucky

Whatever and wherever, our man has seen the light and without any major signings in terms of bank busting money, we will go very close next season.
