But if we'd done the double over United, we'd still have been five points behind Chelsea surely or am I going even more daft in me old age?

I agree though we weren't far off in some ways. We had a team which was plenty good enough to challenge for starters. We had the best striker, the best goalkeeper, the best central midfielder (attacking), the best holding midfielder, a decent defence. We had only one serious injury all season, we didn't have any players going to the African Nations Cup, we didn't sack our manager after half a dozen games, we didn't fall out of the blocks, we had a p!ss easy start to the campaign, an easy Champions League group and didn't play anybody out of the top division in the three rounds in which we competed in in the Fa Cup.

When you look at it you realise that we had a lot of things in our favour really. In the last third of the season, we pretty much picked a settled team and showed title winning form Home and Away. Unfortunately once again giving everyone else a big start while we fiddled around with the formation, the personel and the make-up of the team proved beyond us.

It'll be different this time around though. We won't make 75 changes to the team in the first fifteen matches, we won't fiddle around with the formation and we'll launch a full and bona fide title challenge. It won't though of course because of anything to do with rotation. It'll be because we've signed Deggan/the owners are being nice to everyone/we haven't had injuries (even though we inevitably will) or we haven't been unlucky     :D

Whatever and wherever, our man has seen the light and without any major signings in terms of bank busting money, we will go very close next season.

I´ll be happy to come third, get ahead of Arsenal and consolidate that position.

To break into the top 2 we´re gonna need another 2-3 years and to spend beyond our resources, knowing that once the new stadium is open we´ll be able to recoup the investment.

One place can be gained on the field, we need to win the league off the field before we can win it on it though.

3rd place and the FA cup or CL.

Despite saying that it's not really about setting targets in terms of places, it's about being in the race - actually really in the race not just outsiders with a hypothetical chance - up untill the last few games.

The one thing i dont want to see is the mancs lifting the title, i dont think i could bare seeing them equal our record

I hope more than ever we can mount a serious challenge, we cant let our record go without a fight

Beating the mancs home and away would help, losing to them home and away is becoming too frequent and aiding their cause in beating our record.

now torres has won the european championship he is not going to settle for 2nd or 3rd,he has made it clear he wants to be named world player one day. to let villa con you into buying barry for 18 million ,is asking for future trouble. crouch cost way too much when we bought him,yet now he is 3 times the player nobody wants to pay the correct price cause they know the way rafas mind work, they know he is the king of bargains.he will just throw away money just to get people out the club, but will think nothing of over paying for players then moan that rick parry has not backed all his transfers....we now know those players that were not backed were probably expensive junk like malouda.......rafa got lucky with torres .

people are dictating to and bullying liverpool in the transfer market. why carry on like barry is the new wiz kid from brazil...oh sorry thats lucas. we need more torres type players for 18 million not barry.having said all this i would love barry to join us for 5 million...as a squad player.

i reckon torres can score 40 goals like ronaldo if we get a couple of fast, skillful but very sly wingers.we need some devious thinking plotters in the squad.

we MUST challenge next season for the league....now i'm not saying we must win it....but if we're out of the Premiership race by christmas i expect to see rafa gone by easter.

not saying i agree with it, but this is make or break time for Rafa i feel.

Houllier had one of those, didn't go to (five year) plan did it? We should see improvement, plenty want to give managers time but it's not like he's taking over a relegation side or team that finished mid-table. In four seasons we've finished 5th, 3rd, 3rd and 4th which is no better than what Evans and Houllier managed in their stints. We seem to be going round in circles with signings and only if we can repeat the form of the last third of last season can I see us looking at top two. Not one of the new signings fills me with confidence, nor does the ongoing Barny affair. The minute rumours are rife we might sign David Villa then they're quickly dismissed as rumours

LFC only lost 4 games last season in the PL, and 2 to the champions at that. The reds hit a sticky patch mid season which caused a loss of momentum in the title race, which could easily be blamed on the politics with the owners and the manager. If the club pulls together in the right direction this season the squad, with 1 or 2 additions in key areas is pretty close to giving the rest a real run for there money on all fronts. top 2 finish for me and a trophy would be a successful season.
