What if he doesnt want to stay?

We should make every effort available to keep him, then make some more effort again. I he really wants to go then I suppose there's not a lot we can do, but to sell him voluntarily ar without a fight would be a disgrace

Don't get sucked in to all this stupid talk, assuming you are going to lose your best players is the talk of second rate club's not of LFC.

Selling Gerrard would be a ridiculous piece of business, even for £30m. He's not only our best player but also a talisman for the team, the supporters and the club. Selling him would be tantamount to throwing the towel in and telling the rest of world football that we're not one of the big-boys any more. What Gerrard brings to the club cannot be replaced by money.

I think there's too much panic bouncing around this forum at the moment. We've got half a squad missing through injury, we lost away to a VERY good Boro side and last night we lost to a dodgy goal a Monaco who haven't been beaten in the CL at home in 4 years. Yeah, all that adds up to a really sh*tty couple of weeks but what's the answer - sell our best player?! Insane.

To be fair, most don't want to see Gerrard sold. He's our best player, absolutely no argument. Last nights game was neither her nor there in terms of what a fantastic player he is, he clearly wasn't fit.
The reason people are prepared to think the unthinkable is the Owen scenario. If, and its an IF, gerrard is eyeing up warmer climbs and is looking to go anyway then it's only sensible that we should try and get the best price. Don't be surprised if this is the case to discover that negotiations are already underway with Real, Chelsea and yes, even Manure.
I've said all along I want him to stay. I've also said that if he goes, we should hold out for as near to 50 million pounds as we can get. Not knee-jerk, just fair trade ( I couldn't remember how to spell bizzness )

It is crazy idea to let him go, he is our best player and if we let him go, then we will be in serious trouble without Stevie.

Afternoon lads, long time no post from me. Actually, I haven't been on the boards for a while and am not surprised to be seeing these type of posts about Stevie.

I only caught a little bit of the game last night, but it was evident that Stevie was way out of the game and not quite on the pace of it all, so he needs to be given some time to pick up again.

I do question all the people who post on here claiming that he is our best player in such undisputed terms. I genuinely think he has a great heart and certainly is an example in terms of the effort that he has been showing, but the responsibility that everyone is expecting him to carry has been clearly affecting his performances for some time. I was glad to see some new blood be injected into the midfield at the beginning of the season to help him out, because he was trying to do the job of at least 3 if not 4 players per game and it was affecting his effectiveness. I think that people mistake his potential for real greatness with what he outputs every week and was/am really looking forward to his performances this season with the added support of players around him who can kick/run with and hold a ball if necessary. At the time of his injury, he was only just starting to find his way with these guys and will need probably until christmas to really find a bond there.

The comment about the team not working together when he is playing is something that sprang to my mind as I was watching last night. Everything was almost by default being channelled through him, which adds additional pressure to him as per above and makes it very easy to defend against as we remain the one dimensional attacking force that has frustrated us for the last few seasons. While he was out, the new guys were actually starting to find their way with each other and the attacking was somewhat more random than last night.

We don't need to sell him, unless there is really no money in the kittie for strikers as we are in dire need of cover on that front. The real question and test is whether Stevie can fit in with the new guys. That is the real sign of a great player and only time will tell there.

Its rather simple what Kenny's saying.

Do we sell Gerrard (who is our best player) for a massive amount of money which would allow us to strengthen about 3 or 4 positions in a short space of time or do we keep Gerrard and try to improve over a longer length of time.

Most of you haven't got that kind of patience.

You sell Gerrard for £40m, you can bring in alot of players... let me put it this way...

Duff or Vicente... £15m?
Defoe or Morientes... £15m?
Pennant or Wright-Phillips... £10m?
Fowler... £3m?
Beattie... £8m?
Angel... £10m?
Anelka... £10m?
Baraja... £10m?
Ledley King... £10m?
Gallas... £10?

Options...

Now i'm not Wright-Phillips biggest fan and i don't think he's all that great but he's better than anything we currently have on the right side.

So say we signed Duff, Morientes and Wright-Phillips with Gerrards money.

Looks pretty strong to me, or if Nunez is any good Baraja instead of Wright-Phillips... The more i look at it the more it makes sense...

All of the players i listed above i think are realistic targets and would improve the side so its a case of picking the right players for the right money.

Couple of problems with that

1. Who is going to pay 40m , look at what Real were offering for Viera in the off season

and

2 If they did pay anywhere in that region in wouldnt be in a lump sum ala Rooney instalments

dont agree at all with selling Gerrard.

there's only 2 situations where you should do this in my mind.

one is that you're a struggling, relatively mediocre side (and club) who has unearthed a gem who you can sell on to help raise the status of your team AND club.

another is, if you already are a big club, doin well. you can afford to sell great players from your club, as it is taken for granted there are a few of them (thats why the side is doin so well). you can replace them as your status as a club and team ensures you can bring someone of similar quality (maybe more than one, with the money.)

the second situation doesnt even always pay off though. some players just do so much for a team that they are irreplacable, no matter who else you bring in.

given the fact that Liverpool do not find themselves in any of the 2 given situations (we are a big club but the team level doesnt cut the mustard at the moment) we absolutely cannot afford to sell Gerrard. who is our ONLY great player. there is no back up from any other great players in the team that can compensate for his loss. what he does for the side cannot be replaced by the 3/4 players we'd be able to buy with the money. dont call me ridiculous. i'll say it again; the players we buy with the money will not cover the loss.

i realise we all love Gerrard and praise him all the time, but even so, i think a lot of you really underestimate what he is for Liverpool Football Club.

michesl owen played for micheal owen,not for liverpool football club.he contributed very little to the team and was a passenger in his last two seasons.

Gerrard at times can be a pain and not quite the finished article but again Id rather have him than not
