Liverpool have agreed a deal with American tycoons George Gillett and Tom Hicks, who are set to complete their takeover of the club early next week.
Gillett and Hicks flew to England earlier this week for a secret meeting with senior Liverpool officials.

They persuaded the club to stall talks with Dubai International Capital, who had been expected to buy out the club.

Hicks and Gillett will split the £470m takeover on a 50-50 basis with £215m of that earmarked for a new stadium.

Gillett owns National Hockey League side Montreal Canadiens while Hicks owns rival NHL franchise Dallas Stars as well as the Texas Rangers baseball team.

TAKEOVER COST BREAKDOWN
Buying out shareholders (incl £80m debt): £255m
New stadium: £215m
TOTAL COST: £470m

Hicks has built up a reputation for developing state-of-the-art new stadia for his teams and his participation was a key factor in Liverpool deciding to go with the US bid.

The other issue which clinched the deal is the Americans guaranteed that Liverpool's new stadium on Stanley Park would not be on a groundshare basis, which had been Gillett's original plan when he was considering a solo takeover.

Gillett has impressed Liverpool with his proposals and the speed at which he completed due diligence - the process of investigation by potential investors - in three days.

The 68-year-old American has also stressed his experience in running successful sporting operations.

606 DEBATE: Your views on Liverpool's takeover talks

However, the Independent has claimed that Gillett's business empire collapsed in 1992, leading to a £33.7m personal bankruptcy.

Gillett and Hicks have worked together in the past on the board of a major US meat-processing firm.

Their idea to take over Liverpool gathered force when they met at the NHL All-Star Game last week.

It would be the first time that two owners of rival sports clubs in one league have combined to purchase a club in another.

Parry -  I am afraid you will have to answer certain questions so that we know you are the right type of owner
S@int - Thats ok I understand, fire away
Parry - How much are you willing to pay
S@int £5001 per share
Parry - Congratulations you have just bought yourself a football club
S@int - Dont you want to know about my previous history? I did go bankrupt a few years ago.
Parry - Your not bankrupt now are you ? You did say £5001 per share didn't you?
S@int - Yes but I would have to raise the money from loans and to pay it back I would have to raise ticket prices and maybe sell a couple of star players.
Parry - £5001 per share?
S@int - Yes but...
Parry - sold to the gentleman with an asterisk in his name!

:D

    lol just read this one.. almost had me in tears.. nice one!

Theres abit of talk about it on the Habs web site. Here's the link  http://forum.canadiens.com/showthread.php?t=13853

We'll have to wait and see. I watched the all star game last week and that was held at the Dallas stars stadium. Great facilities.

Quiet strange that Gillite now owns two of my fave teams.

As long as he keeps Rick Parry on and can meet Rafas financial needs for new players then im fine with this.

The new stadium was always going to be part of whoever took us over. I admit his previous bankrupcies do cast a bit of a doubt but as wierd as this week has been im still confident that David Moores and Rick Parry are looking after the interests of the club.

So now, the end is near....

Im afraid I am going to shed some negative vibes around.
So the deal is just as good as completed. as soon as both parties sign on the dotted line the final chapter in Liverpool FC's unsurpassed history will close.
THIS CLUB WILL NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN.
Don't worry though, we'll get the new big shiney stadiummost of us have always wanted only it wont be called Anfield, it'll be The Gillette Stadium - no doubt about it. Hell, the name 'Liverpool FC' may even change too. It'll pick up a more American feel to it. The Liverpool Rangers, The Liverpool Pirates or maybe Liverpool Galaxy.

I'm upset, peeved off and worried.

Pre season freindly tours will no longer be Scandinavian, Irish & Oriental - we'll be playing over in the states close season.

DISASTER.

Be prepared for the p!ss takes from Chelsea & Scum Fans. We ridiculed Man U when they got sold out to the yanks, now it's us. We constantly heckle Chelsea for 'buying the league', this too may well be us next season.

Land of hope and glory? my ar$e.

I've been trying to stay out of this thread as:

1) I am not a finance man

2) I am not really that bothered about what goes on in the background. Its on the pitch that matters to me.

However I have been reading all the articles in the papers in the last few days and I am slightly worried. Firstly DIC Investments had a hell of a lot of money, and it was there own, not borrowed like this Gilette fella. I don't like the idea of Moores backing out of selling the club after a handshake. Thats not Liverpool's way of dealing.

I am glad investment is being made but slightly worried by the recent events.  ???

Named stadiums are common these days, Emirates, JJB, Reebok ect......its just another way to get funding.

And dont get any silly perceptions that the club is goingt to be renamed. I admit i did have a laugh at some of the "new possible crests" for Man Utd when they got taken over but be a little realistic will you.

As for buying the league well if you mean Gilette give Rafa the fund he needs to bring the Premiership to its rightful home then fine i hope we do buy the :censored: league.

As Rafa Dodd said its on the pitch what matters the most. If this helps to improve the squad then so be it.

If there was indeed more substance to DICs supposed plans to sell us after x years you wouldnt be talking so sarcastically now would you.

I hope we are not going to see a fan revolt like what went on when Glazer took over Man Utd. We are better than that and if Gilette is going to be our new owner I would have hoped that he gets a warm welcome. Do you all of a sudden see Moores and  Parry as an emeny just becasue DIC have :censored: of?

Ok yeah it would have been nice to have someone richer that Abramovich at the helm but that sort of money isnt a must. I dont remember any multi billionaires funding Arsenal when they won so many leagues in recent years do you?

As long as he puts his money where his mouth and doesnt :censored: around with the board and disrespect the fans then he wont have any problems with me.

I agree with ya on most things and I also welcome the new owners with open arms. Providing, they dont mess with the team/board/name and they dont upset the fans. We like things the way they are but the extra cash is nice  :D

We'll see.

interesting article here from bascombe

The success of their trip to Merseyside suggests the American duo are either the most perceptive, astute and forward-thinking entrepreneurs in the world, or the most fortunate.

If the Club didnt think the DIC deal was right then I have no problem with them looking elsewhere.  However Parry publically said the DIC deal was right for the club, why the change?  If it wasnt because there was a higher offer, what was it?
