A narrow win for the Czech Republic in their Group 1 qualifier against Andorra. That's a narrow 8-1 victory. One of the heroes of Istanbul, Vladimir Smicer, scored the Czech Republic's third on 38 minutes before being substituted at half-time. Another Red, Milan Baros, scored their fifth after 80 minutes.

In the same group Holland beat Romania 2-0, with reported Liverpool target Dirk Kuyt getting the second for the Dutch.

In Group Five John Arne Riise picked up a yellow card in Norway's goalless draw against Italy.

Jerzy Dudek had a quiet night between the sticks for Poland as they went to the top of Group Six in Azerbaijan. Poland won 3-0 against the team they beat 8-0 at home in March.

A lot of interest from a Liverpool perspective in the Group Seven game between Spain and Lithuania. Current Reds Luis Garcia and Xabi Alonso were substitutes for Spain. Alonso stayed on the bench but Garcia came on after 61 minutes in place of Del Horno. Also on the bench was the Villareal keeper Jose Reina, who has been strongly linked with a move to Anfield later this month. The latest player linked with the Reds, Raul, played for 79 minutes for the Spaniards.
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

Good stuff from Jerzy. I've watched the game.

One thing struck me, when Azereijan went 0:3 down their coach -  Carlos Alberto Torres - Brazilian (World Cup Winner) got so upset (cause this match means he's laid off and he's got a 1 mil $ / year contract) and slapped around side referee causing ruckus on the stands.
Sick, now he won't find a job nowhere.  :alien:

Great news.

Not sure why alonso is not 1st choice for Spain though... I though he was their best central midfielder.

The less our international players play for their countries the better so they do not pick any injuries. Next season we need a squad of around 22 players in very good shape.

Pity how Milan Baros scores in every international game and not when hes playing for Liverpool.... there must be something about Rafa's system that just does not suit Baros.

Neither u nor any Saniard can understand how Xabi is not playing every single match form the beginning in Spanish national team...oue coach seems to have some fixed ideas and he goes on relying on Albelda as defensive midfielder...I guess hes the typical player that most coaches like (an extension of him in the pitch...doing things perfectly tactically speaking). Anyway...Im sure Xab will play every match in Germany´06 (well...the first 3 and the quarter final...thats traditionally the Spanish participation in World Cups...:(  )
