Stevie g - Where will he play?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby RED ANT » Fri Jul 07, 2006 10:23 pm

Hi everyone , ain't posted for a while but have still been reading a fair bit.

Anyway i've been wondering lately just where our best player will fit in to the team next season. If as planned we bring in a top class right winger be it Alves or someone else where will Stevie play.

If we were to play a four across midfield which was our most successful formation last year will he play in the centre at the expense of either Alonso or Momo.

I know you have to have a big squad and all that but i'm talking about our first choice starting line up. Momo and Alonso seem to be extremely important players to Rafas plans so i don't see either of those being benched very often so in a four that leaves stevie to play wide left or right or behind a single striker.

Left midfield seems a ridiculous notion as we are very strong down that side already. Playing behind a single forward dosen't make sense as we are looking to have potentially four top class forwards in the squad next season already so this leaves either the right hand side or we play with three at the back.

It would seem that Rafa dosen't envisage Stevie on the right hand side or he wouldn't be chasing such a good player as Alves just to have as cover so lets get onto a wing back formation.

If we were to go down that route we definately have the central defenders to play that formation but would we have the wide players?

Alves seems to be made for that position but does Kewell or Gonzo? i personally don't think either of them would suit that role so this is why i posted the question.

Obviously Stevie has to play so where?

Please your thoughts on the matter

I truely believe he should be playing right midfield, last year we were playing our best football when we were playing 4-4-2 with alonso and sissoko in the middle and stevie out on the right. Sissoko is one of our most consistant performers and I don't think he should be left out of the starting eleven, Alonso and Gerrard should unquestionably be in our starting eleven also which means either playing with 5 in midfield or Gerrard on the right. I would prefer the latter as I dont think the 4-5-1/4-2-3-1 formation suits us however much Rafa prefers it.

Ofcourse if we get a right winger, Rafa will have so many options. He may go back to a 4-5-1 formation in some games, or stick mostly to a 4-4-2  formation. The arrival of a right winger will shift Gerrard back into the center of midfield.

But Gerrard will have some games on the right hand side, because Rafa will rotate his squad. Remember that Stevie is the most important player of the squad and he will play anywhere where rafa puts him. I think we will see Sissoko playing less games than his first season because of the arrival of a right winger we are currently linked with.

I agree. My personal prefference would be seeing him back in the middle. One of the things I love most from Gerrard, is the discipline and no complaining attitude that he had last season playing there where the team needed him most, although not being his natural position. Great footballer. World Class.

I posted smething last season re. where will Gerrard play?
Everyoone seems to admit that we were best with Sissoko, Alonso, Gerrard,
So does that mean he's stuck out on the right again?

Stevie G should be allowed to roam behind the 2 strikers.

Nah.... I reckon with the capture of Aurelio, Gonzalez and Palleta and the immenent capture of Alves (I hope), that we'll be playing 5-3-2 with wingbacks....

That'll leave room for 3 in the middle and stevie can slot in behind the 2 strikers.

id like to see stevie g in the middle again. He can command the midfield from there like no other from there.

he could play on right side and swap with Bellamy during game no matter where he plays he will hurt opponents imo his best position is just behind 2 strikers bursting into area he will probably start season on right depending on who comes in
