Squad numbers - Number 7?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby mattylfc » Thu Jul 10, 2008 5:36 pm

Apologies if this has already been discussed but it got me thinking today when it was announced that Dossena has been handed the number 2 shirt and Degan has been handed the number 27 shirt.

With Riise leaving that means that the number 6 shirt is now vacant. I am assuming that If/When the Gareth Barry transfer goes through he will take the number 6 shirt as that is what he wears at Aston Villa.

I know this is pretty insignificant to most but i just wondered who you think should be handed the number 7 shirt now that Kewell has left.

The number 7 shirt would be a massive compliment to any player at this club and i was just thinking today whether Rafa is waiting to see who comes in and whether the new recruit will take the shirt or if he is thinking of handing it to one of our current squad players such as Masch, Kuyt, Lucas or Alosno (if he stays).

What do you think and who would you hand it to?

Alonso requested the number 14, and has been 14 in every team he's played for I think, including Spain.

Mascherano isn't an attack-minded player, Lucas isn't good enough for it, and the rest of the squad aren't number 7's in my mind.

I think it's safe to assume we're in the market for a winger...

No harm leaving it vacant for now.

Don't think 7 suits any member of our current squad, let's wait and see who else arrives this summer.

the no 7 shirt is special...Daglish wore it and it should be saved for a creative winger.

I don't think that it should be handed to anybody until they've proven themselves good enough to wear it to be honest. Every player since Dalglish (probably excluding McManaman - back stabbing cnut that he is) that has had it has been a near enough disaster.

Im note being funny here like but dont you think every numbered shirt that turns out on the pitch is special. I understand what the special no 7 shirt means but as far as im concered who ever get that shirt and does the job hes supposed to while on the pitch i dont care who wears the shirt

ok, bad example  of a winger, but still a great player. Robbie Keane would be a good player for it tho

No Alonso always wanted his dad's 4 mate. When he couldn't get it because it was Hyypia's, he got the 14.

I guess that in Spanish Squad these days he uses the 14 as a  :;): to LFC.

As for the "7" in my football the "7" has been traditionally of an "interior", a right or left midfielder, not a striker like Raul. Wouldn't mind to see Silva with it.

Torres would look good with number 7 methinks..

wasn't 7 the right wing in the beginnings of football, when you had 5 forwards ?

Something like:

11----9----7
---10---8---

I know even in more modern times when the starters were always wearing 1-11 (back in the 80s) no 7 was usually a right winger, at least in Romania.
