Right midfield - Who would you buy?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I do believe we need to give Pennant a chance to prove himself but assuming he doesnt improve, who would you buy? Anyone in the world, lets try and keep it realistic though.

Would you go for some English talent (Lennon/SWP etc)?

Would you go for someone promising or proven?

Would you go for someone in the mould of an out and out winger or would you buy a right midfielder?

I dont think Liverpool can play as effectively with 2 out and out R Wingers so I would be happy with a right midfielder once Kewell is back. Scott Parker did a great job there for Charlton earlier in his career, and he would be a useful squad player, as he can also play defensive midfield and central midfield. Whether he would be happy playing there now? Either SWP or Lennon would be ideal for me if we wanted a more attacking winger.

I'd prefer lennon if we're going for british talent.... Else if we can, I'd go for a wingback in the form of Zambrotta (yes... this is not all that realistic and he predominantly plays down the left, but he's an outstanding talent who is 2 footed and can play on the right as well as in the fullback positions) and Alves.... still a rate him extremely highly..... :D

Chelsea would never sell us SWP. IF we put a bid in for Lennon then u can bet Chelsea would try and outbid us just for the sake of us not getting the player. Atm the best RW in the world is Schweinsteiger imo but Bayern arent the kind of club to sell their best players as theyre showing right now with Hargreaves. The only realistic option who looks good enough for Liverpool is Alves, every time Ive seen him hes been excellent and as he doesnt play for a top club so we could probably get him for 12m or so.

I read somewhere that Alves was going to Real Madrid in the summer and that Liverpool were going to buy Cicinho off them. Latest seems to suggest Chelsea are interested. (We just cant compete with them)

Its a shame Chelsea have been linked with Alves, that will make it very hard for us to sign him.

The reason i asked the question is because me and my mate couldnt really think of too many options to be honest. Just wondered who people rated in that position.

Bleedin' hell.... I didn't know that.... They're trying to upset the apple card again by pricing him way out of our reach? WTF for? they don't need another rightback.... the've already got that animal Boulahrouz and Ferreira and not forgetting Geremi......

i think rafa had Alves in mind when he drafted Aurelio in, to deploy two out and out 'wingbacks'. Two factors have prohibited this: Primarily the f**king about of Sevilla's board over a fee. And the time its taking FA to settle here may well demand a rethink on that score anyway. For me Alves is made to 'look' effective in a continental side that has many facets aiding his influence, not least his partnership with Navas which has been instrumental to his rising stock. Over here, in the Prem - i think he'd find it tough(er) to say the least. If we are to eventually tie down one particular player, suitable to the role of a RM/W - the answer may lie in the shaping/development of one of the existing reserves as opposed to chasing straws in an overinflated market imo. Pennant isnt the answer (yet?) if at all. and eventually ill go as far as to say, the right side will possibly be patrolled by the likes of Anderson/Barragan/Paletta....its all you can do really, speculate.

Jose isnt convinced by either RB. Geremi is in side now due to other two's poor form.

This type of comment makes me laugh; it also shows that most fans seem to think that players will sign for a club who has more money than another. A player holds the cards with where he wants to go, Alves might feel more comfortable at Liverpool because of the Spanish contingence. So if Alves has had enough of Sevilla and wants a move to Liverpool, Sevilla have little choice, but to accept our bid. It's all about the player and what he wants.

Unfortunately the majority of players will go to the club who offers the most amount of money, sad but true

Hate to say this, but just before we signed Morientes I posted a topic headed 'Wright-Phillips or a striker?'

Had a fair debate on here, but general consensus was a striker was more important and so we went for Morientes. Even then i felt it was the time to go for SWP, as we had a reasonable chance of getting him for about £12m - Ian Wright, if i remember rightly, was telling the lad he'd get more of a chance to shine with us than at Chelsea. Obviously Citeh were after the highest bidder and Chelsea were gonna outbid us, but i think we and his dad could have swayed him.

I also thought then that there's always more chance of signing effective strikers than specialist right wingers, who are fairly thin on the ground, not least cos in Europe they tend to play either wing backs or more narrow and through the middle. He was the last decent English right winger up for grabs. We've got no chance of getting him off CFC now and Lennon is now worth even more.

Pennant is not and never will be Liverpool class.

Anyone know how far Anderson is away from making the grade?

Not always, Kuyt turned down Newcastle who was offering far more in terms of wages than we were prepared/able to give him. Xabi Alonso could have gone to Real Madrid as they made an approach for him, but he didn't, he chose to come to Liverpool. I'm not saying this is the trend for everyone, because I'm not naive into thinking a large proportion of players go to clubs to play football, I'm aware that there are a proportion of players who play football for money, but you can't generalise too much. This club has more than enough in it's locker to attract players of a good quality, Benitez just doesn't use all these qualities to his advantage. If Alves wants to come to Liverpool, you can be sure he will, if he doesn't then he won't, it's as simple as that and there is nothing Chelsea or the man who sits on the moon can do about it.

Alves had the chance to show which club he wanted earlier this season. He has signed a new contract now and so will only be allowed to leave if the club receives the right offer. If Chelsea make the right offer there is no way we can match it. i.e. Michael Owen had to go to Newcastle or warm the bench at Real M. Alves has already stated a preference for Real Madrid so we come a long way back as third choice.

A player only really holds all the cards when their contract is running down.

Real Madrid made an enquiry about Xabi Alonso as did the Mancs but they never made an offer.
