Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

What did I say about 6 months ago on here? I said Rafa would be around for at least another three years. I was mocked.

I think the new contract also gives us the chance to see how the kids turn out in a few years time. Rafa has signed many kids, presumably with immense potential e.g. Pacheco so the next 2 years will be critical to gauge how these kids turn out to be. If we can churn out talented young talents like what Wenger is doing with Arsenal, then that would be the best investments that Rafa have ever made.

Personally, I'm glad that Rafa is given a new long term contract. I may not agree with some of his decisions but then he's still doing a good job, so no complaints.

Offering him this contract is just quite simply ridiculous and Im not talking about the money !
If anything they should have given him a pay rise for the rest of the duration of his contract and then told him that a new deal could be negotiated at the end of the season depending on how we end up performing in the league, Cl..etc

He still makes way too many mistakes for my liking, way too negative in his tactics at times and is absolutely gloriously shambolic in the transfer market ! Wouldnt go as far as calling him a clown , the guy is obviously a genius when it comes to setting a team up to defend or try to nick an aggregate advantage but overall, i can't see him winning us the league, not anytime soon i dont !

Good start to the season and all but lets not get ahead of ourselves here, the guys been around long enough and we'r yet to challenge for the league ... not much has changed from last year and if it wasnt for a few results going our way early on getting us to the position we are at in the league so far im sure most of you here would have been way more reserved about the whole new contract thing he's been going on and on about !

Valencia and Liverpool are similar in size ???

Rafa: We need rivals to slip up to win title

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has said his side won't win the Premier League title unless rivals slip up.

The Reds haven't won a domestic league title for 19 years and despite currently topping the table with only one defeat in 16 games – their best ever start to a Premier League season – Benitez thinks that they are still relying on their title rivals to slip up.

“For us to win the league we need Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal to mess up and it is rare that three teams all mess up," said the Spaniard.

“So there's no point in waiting for our direct adversaries to slip up because it won't happen.”

The former Valencia boss also drew comparisons between his two title wins with Los Che and the current campaign with Liverpool.

“For me, Valencia and Liverpool are similar - for them to win, the bigger clubs have to do badly.

"When I won La Liga with Valencia that's what happened: Real Madrid and Barcelona were in transition, so it was easier."

These comments come only a day after Benitez expressed his intentions to see his side maintain their lead over Chelsea.

Speaking to the club’s official website ahead of tomorrow’s game against surprise package Hull City at Anfield, Benitez said:

"We can now concentrate on domestic considerations. We do not want to give up top spot.  We now have almost three months to concentrate on the Premier League, and the FA Cup. We would want to go back into Europe next year still top of the table."

Benitez believes that the reason for their reliance on other teams faltering is down to their rivals’ spending power, stating that they have “greater financial means” than the Mersysiders.

With only a few weeks to go until the transfer window opens, this could be seen as a signal for Liverpool’s American owners, Tom Hicks and George Gillette, to dig deep in order for Benitez to strengthen in January.

Benitez is currently in negotiations with the Anfield board over a new contract and the issue of January’s potential transfer kitty could prove to be an important one, although Benitez has stressed that the length of the contract is the most important.

"The question was about the length of the contract, and after that it was my role. We are talking about more (years) now, and we are happy with the talks.”

bigger clubs ?
financial power ?

we'r top of the table so for him to come out and say clearly say that we arent going to win the league this season is an absolute joke of a comment to make, and he wants a new contract because ?!

he obviously believes we cant get as many points as ManUtd, Chelsea and even Arsenal are going to until the end of the season... wonder how the players would react to such comments !!!!

Benitez doubts Liverpool title credentials

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez believes that his Premier League leaders can only win the title if Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal fail to mount a decent challenge.

Speaking ahead of his team's clash with Hull City on Saturday the Spaniard also said he considered Liverpool to be a small club compared to the "bigger" clubs of England's established top four.

Benitez said: "For us to win the league we need Chelsea, Man United and Arsenal to mess up their season. It is very rare that three teams all mess up."

Liverpool are one point clear of second-placed Chelsea and six ahead of Manchester United, who have a game in hand, with Arsenal in fourth, eight points off the pace.

Prior to joining Liverpool in 2004, Benitez won the La Liga title with Valencia and the Spaniard can see parallels with the Reds' challenge this season.

"For me, Valencia and Liverpool are similar - for them to win, the bigger clubs have to do badly," Benitez said. "When I won La Liga with Valencia that's what happened, Real Madrid and Barcelona were in transition, so it was easier."

But Benitez has charged his team with building a lead at the top of the Premier League now that the Champions League is on a winter break.

With the group stage finishing this week - Liverpool comfortably qualified for the last 16 - there is now a lull in European competition until the knockout stage begins in February. And Benitez has urged his side to knuckle down for those 10 league games.

"We now have almost three months to concentrate on the Premier League, and the FA Cup. We would want to go back into Europe next year still top of the table.

"We have qualified for the next stage in Europe, we are top of the Premier League, and now we can concentrate on domestic considerations. We do not want to give up top spot. If we are still there when we start up again in Europe, the chances of a really good season will be obvious."
