PAUL KONCHESKY - Official Thread

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Bad Bob » Tue Sep 21, 2010 1:08 pm

I find it interesting how much blame Konchesky's getting for the goals when teammates were just as if not more culpable for all three.  Torres did an abyssmal job marking Berbatov for their first (although Konchesky absolutely should have been on the post), while Carragher should have done much better marking Berbatov for the second and third.  Of course the second was just one of those fluke goals in many ways but Carragher could have got over to Berbatov quicker and not allowed him the time he did.  On the third he should have also been more physical with Berbatov to prevent such a clean header.  Konchesky did not have a great game by any means but to single him out for the goals is excessively narrow.

Its getting tedious for me reading them anyway.
I am not trying to wind him up, i am being genuine in my thoughts and opinions on this.

I think the forum would find a reasoned arguement against someones observations regarding the manager, team, player whatever, more interesting than repeated references to their real or imagined "agenda"

As for the third goal - Agger is a cb not a natural left back but some blame must be given to Jovanovic as well as Agger closed down Nani quickly but shifted the ball to O Shea ( who was rightly still on the pitch ) who put the cross in , Jovanovic should of been marking O shea .

The 2nd goal was just one of those things, a cross came in from our left but it wasnt the cross that made the goal.
It was crossed from a poor angle really and didnt come at Berbatov in a good position at all. He had to control it with his back to goal with his knee.
If you think that's Koncheskys fault for not shutting out the initial cross then i think it underlines your over criticism.
To stop every cross isnt possible. What you need to do is try and make sure balls come in from angles that should suit the defending team, i think that was one of those crosses, Berbatovs genius made that goal from nothing.

Woof, here is my reply to what he said.

I was debating football but it appears common sense can go out of the window with certain posters.

That's how I see it too. Konchesky was no man of the match candidate, but he wasn't anywhere near so bad as some are claiming either.

The best three players on the pitch were Berbatov, Nani and Gerrard. Unfortunately the fact that two of the three play for them was probably the difference.

Nani though is a quality player, and will trouble most left backs in the league I should think.

Ok will admit he wasn't solely at fault for the first two goals - Torres marking was shocking at the corner and I'm putting that down to swapping to man to man marking and second goal carra afforded Berbatov too much time and space - the reason I am critical is he is involved in both the goals which is either bad luck or just extremely poor play for Konchesky .I know he can't close down every cross but there seems to be an alarming amount coming from his area and I believe he is standing off his player too much , giving them time and space to be picked out by an oppo and then the time to put a cross in .

From what I remember of the match Konchesky was caught ball watching and dragged over to the middle on a couple of occassions. This left a massive gap behind him which Cole should have filled (if that was his job). I just hope that he doesnt dismiss this game with a "I just want to forget I had a mare" attitude as I honestly believe it will happen again if he doesn recognise it, acknowledge it and cut it out.
Yes he is finding his feet but basic, simple, fundamental defending is the least I expect from a seasoned prem player. The comic shuffling to the middle of the goal on a corner has to be something he never repeats.

I think even before we signed him I was completely honest in my assessment of Konchesky ,I simply couldn't see him as the solution to our left back problem ,and what's more baffling is posters claiming although he is not the fastest, or most solid defender ,or for that matter the most dominant in the air we could have bought..... he will still do a job ...... how exactly  ??? when we needed a defender with these precise attributes when  we needed a defender who was quick, solid and aerially dominant,  we decided to settle on someone who its been proven is bereft of these particular traits  .... Nani isn't the only winger in the Premiership who is capable of giving our new left back a torrid time ....
I would have honestly loved Konchesky to prove myself and the doubters wrong ... but sadly even at this early stage of the season  I'm afraid he just doesn't have it in his locker

Yep, exactly how I feel, RB. For those who belief we've got it in us to be a top side, well, I've news for you all: no top side would contain a player like Konchesky for a back-up, nevermind being picked as a regular left back. What? You think that's harsh or I'm moaning? Them's the facts!

Now, are you another one that's trying to re-write recent history? I remember us almost getting to a 3rd CL final in four seasons and coming within a whisker of winning the title in the same year season before last. And I said a side aspiring to be a top side, or those with the belief that we should be coming at least fourth in the league this season.

I dont need to re-write recent history. A top side is a winning side. We used to be THE top side in the late 60s, 70s and 80s. We havent won anything since 2006. That doesnt mean we should be buying sh'it players though. As far as I can see Konchesky is having an ok start, besides his mare on sunday. I will make my mind up about him later on in the season. I already think hes better than Insua.

Season before last   ???

There's a difference between a "top side" and "the topside"

Apart from last seasons disappointment I thought we'd done enough in recent years to convince even the most myopic that a consistent top four finish had re-established us as a top side.

Yep - despite last seasons poor performance we are still classed as a top side - i read somewhere on here that finishing in the top 4 is an average season ? For me thats a great season .

Read up and you will see me also mentioning the poor marking from Torres for the first goal and from carra for second goal .
