1. Gerrard
2. Iniesta
3. Essien
4. Xavi
5. Alonso
6. Kaka
7. Mascherano
8. Arjen Robben
9. Fabregas
10. Ashley Young

I take it Messi and the puff from Man Ure doesn't count as midfielders? Why is there no wingers in your top 10 guys?

EDIT: I have read the first post, but Arshavin's in there, and he isn't a CM.

I don't see enough of international football as I only watch Liverpool, Real Sociedad, and a La Liga game per week, so players like Schwensteiger or Pirlo are players who I see in the odd highlight, or the odd international game. That is, I can't really do a proper list with all the world players in it.

But I write in a local forum, and I wanted to confirm a theory. Every fan, of every league will have a bias towards the players they know most, that is, their league.

I requested the list of several members, so that you can see what they think the guys watching international footie about the best 10 midfielders.

Walleum:

Fabregas
Xabi Alonso
Mascherano
Xavi
Iniesta
Gerrard
Diego
Gourcuff
Kaka
Lampard

-------

-Iniesta
-Xavi
-Toure Yaya
-Gerrard
-Xabi Alonso
-Cesc
-Lampard
-Kaka
-Modric
-Mascherano

-------------

-----------

Below this, the names that everyone on that Spanish forum agrees:

-Iniesta
-Xavi
-Gerrard
-Cesc
-Xabi Alonso
-Lampard

No surprises, the ones I expected, bar Lampard, who I don't rate as top 10 midfielder whatsoever.

Of course it's a basque forum, so you could say too they have a bias towards Alonso. :)

You can see how, however, Gerrard is truely World Class player, because he's a foreign player that it's acknowledged in all the lists. The likes of Essien, unsurprisingly, are extremely anonymous in my country when it comes to consider them top of the top. I think you can blame the "latino" bias there, just as you don't forgive players that are not up to the high tempo, in Spain players who really have not pure skill in their boots are more anonymous (of course they're known but I mean as in rating them as top of the top).

anyways...
ill give you my top10 central midfielders list...

1. Gerrard
2. Kaka
3. Xavi
4. Essien
5. Lampard
6. Fabregas
7. Scholes
8. Seedorf
9. Ballack
10. Iniesta

The likes of Ronaldinho, Giggs, Deco and Pirlo deserve and honourable mention and would be somewhere in a more expanded list i guess if only for what they've achieved in their careers... but for the top 10 in the world today imo its hard to see past this bunch...

scholes, seedorf and ballack in your top ten after those comments :no

After what comments ?
and whats wrong with having Scholes, Seedorf and Ballack in a top 10 CMs list ? Scholes is playing in arguably the best side in club football in recent times and is still a vital member in their squad... he rarely has a bad game and can control the tempo of the game better than any other CM around atm imo... its hard to argue that despite his age hes still one of the best central midfielders in the world and probably the best central midfielder since the premiership began...
Seedorf im not sure youve seen much of to be honest so ill just leave it at that... and Ballack iv already gone over that...

Yes Gerrard, in that case he has a soft spot for Barcelona, but he's not the only one to include Toure, which BTW, as much as I like the player, I disagree.

--
Fabregas
Xavi
Iniesta
Yaya Toure
Gerrard
Alonso
Lampard
Essien
Ashley Young
Arteta
----

I can't believe one of my mates have included Young and Arteta, too. :D

It's fun to ask in different countries because you actually can see how the media operate. The names that you read there is often the names the pundits praise.

There's the odd surprise, like one mate agreeing Giggs (FFS) as still top football

Fabregas
Xavi
Iniesta
Senna
Gerrard
Alonso
Lampard
Cazorla
Mascherano
Giggs

But there are always common factors like Gerrard and Xavi and surprisingly Lampard, that appear. It's curious this.

So no one rates Senna then? I think he's a quality player.

I rate him, but I tend to penalize players who are aging, perhaps it's a mistake of mine, but I think that Seedorf, Senna, or Giggs, Scholes were, but aren't current top of the top.

And maybe I'm unfair here, but if MANY >32 year old players make it to the top list, then current football should be worried about being stuck. Anyway, I preffer to read your opinions since I watch many players you mention only from time to time.

I'll just say top 5 since I don't watch enough football bar Liverpool to give a clear top 10 list.  I'm not counting Gerrard or Kaka.. for me Gerrard probably JUST made it into top 5 anyway when he played as CM.

In no particular order either.. (CMs)

Xabi
Fabregas
Xavi
Lampard
Essien

No offense but some of these list are mind boggling, on current form how can you pick some of these guys? Too much to get into but many of the people being posted on these list are past it and don't play in the big games enough anymore.

Utter rubbish.

For a start, he can't tackle to save his life!

He did a tremendous job of controlling our 4-1 spanking of the Mancs, didn't he... :D

It puzzles me how, based on 1 performance, Essien is in the list.

He's a f*cking dirty, cheating b*stard. He's only palyed about 4 games this year aswell!

Unreal. :no

Well the original post was about compiling your list of top midfielders.

Essien definitely deserves to be in that list, he's world class.

Is he f*ck.

What is he "World Class" at, other than trying to break legs?
