Liverpool and benfica players

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby galo » Thu Jan 19, 2006 3:00 am

I'm sorry to start a thread about something most liverpool fans might not be interested, but I thought it was funny. :)

Most of you imagine that there isn't much in common between Liverpool and Benfica.
Well, there are some players that played for both clubs in their carrers and I wanted to know your feelings about them when they played for Liverpool, as they are widely regarded as some of the worst players to have worn Benfica's shirt. :)

- Steve Harkness
- Gary Charles
- Dean Saunders

Note: All of these players were brought in by Graeme Souness, when he was Benfica's coach for 2 years between 1997 and 1999.

Did Gary Charles play for Liverpool? ???

Harkness was average. Saunders... bit before my time to be fair.

Used to play right back for Villa and Derby. Was excellent in Champ Manager 1993/94. Classic game. :D

stu is right, sorry.

I thought he had played for Liverpool , but he played for Nottingham Forest, Derby County, Aston Villa and West Ham some years ago.
Sorry I was mistaken.

He was a right back, a very bad one really :)

Dundalk I didn't knew what you were talking about but I found this through Google:

May 1991: Already touted as a flourishing genius, Gazza promises all and delivers nothing for Spurs in the FA Cup final. He makes a lunging challenge on Nottingham Forest's Gary Charles, and ends up on the stretcher. Diagnosis: torn cruciate right knee ligaments. Doctors order's: 16 months out of the game.

So I think it's him. :D

It wasn't Gary Charles but Michael Thomas the other player that played for both teams. :D

Michael Thomas...has such great instincts for goals for a midfield player, almost (but not quite) as good as Terry Mac or John Wark when it comes to scoring from midfield. That's about all to his game, not industrious, didn't really pass that well and has little effect in the middle of the park.

He scored that wretched heart-breaking goal with virtually the last kick of the game in our 0-2 loss to Arsenal in 1988-89 which gave Arsenal the First Division title. His finishing was very striker-like, so cool and clinical.

As for Dean Saunders, If I am not mistaken, he followed Souness around quite a bit and is now a coach at Newcastle.
