First Kuyt injured and now Torres a bit of a worry.

FERNANDO TORRES is set to make a swift recovery from the injury scare he suffered on international duty.

Liverpool’s seven-goal top scorer sat out training with the Spanish national team yesterday with a knock to his left ankle, and opted for gym work instead.

He is expected to be fit for Spain’s Euro 2008 qualifier in Denmark on Saturday but will be re-assessed for their friendly in Finland on the following Wednesday.

And Rafael Benitez now faces an anxious wait to see if Torres aggravates the ankle twinge with the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park looming a week on Saturday.

As far as I can tell Ciggy, there is no doubts about him playing against Denmark.

Another quick note of info that you won't like: The UEFA board has reduced the punnishment to Xabi Alonso from 3 games, to 2, that means he'll be able to play November the 17th in Madrid.

Xabi Alonso is expected to be recovered from his injury November the 3rd.

You know, international pride, world stage and all that aside for a moment...when you stare at that ticker that SS have running along the bottom of the screen. Invariably you will see (prior to these qualifyers/friendlies) things like..

***Ashley Cole pulled out of McLarens squad due to thigh strain*** Owen Hargreaves not expected to train following a sore foot and is a doubt*** John Terry despite being declared out for 6 weeks is in line for an early return***(sarcasm that one) or.. *** Rio Ferdinand sits out training with mystery virus*** Wayne Rooney hasn't travelled due to medical advice *** etc etc..


Then you see:

*** Steven Gerrard has expressed his intention to play with a painkilling injection *** Michael Owen is determined to return *** Crouch will defy the odds and start against Russia ***

OK slight bending of the facts there. But it is a common theme. Why do our players almost always seem to be the first to step up to the plate? Is it out of Bottle, heart, passion, integrity and stamina or pride in representing the three lions...or is it to get away from Anfield/Melwood for a week!  Carra is the only one who came out and stuck the finger up.

But why is it, the managers of the other top sides can get away with fobbing McLaren off so easy - telling him that their players have a slight knock/cold/tummy ache etc.. only to return to league action the next week. Im not suggesting Rafa follows their example to the letter..but at times it would be nice to see him turn round and at least not get criticised on the rare occasion that he has done, even then its been out of necessity and not the kind of shenannigans that the others do.  Fergie, Wenger and the late Jose get away with murder. I don't see their personnel kicking off about it back at the respective clubs either - especially not to the media.

F**king hate these 'breaks' as they are euphemistically termed. As if they are some great big jolly for the lads. They should be keeping an eye on the next league game, not concentrating on keeping that tw@t in a job!!

you got it all spot on. the liverpool players are so eager to play for the club. is melwood really that bad? and why is it called an international break? in what way is it a break?

Got to agree with you on virtually all points here.

Rafa really should consider pulling Torres, Gerrard, Hyypia, Pepe, and whomever else is likely to start against the bitters out of their respective national teams, and f*ck the consequences.

It's about time Rafa the gaffer got tough with these nancies.

I don't think LFC should ever sink that low.
Just because Fergie allegedly does that doesn't mean we have to follow suit.

Personally I've always found it deplorable when players feign injuries, cheat, dive and tried to get another player sent off. Same can be said for managers who always "apparently" don't see an incident when it involves one of their own players but have magnifying glasses when an incident involving the opponents occurs 200 yards away in a crowd of players.

IMO we should NEVER sink that low...

The Chelsea centre-back was sent for a scan on Thursday after picking up the problem in training.  The damage is not thought to be too bad, but Steve McClaren has quickly ruled Terry out of the clash at Wembley'.
