Heysel - 24 years on

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Redman in wales » Fri May 29, 2009 10:09 am

This is taken from the LFC website, as it says it all really.....

On the 24th anniversary of the Heysel Stadium tragedy, Liverpool Football Club remembers the 39 football supporters who went to watch a European Cup final and sadly never returned.
On 29 May, 1985, the deaths of 32 Italians, four Belgians, two Frenchmen and one man from Northern Ireland totally overshadowed our European Cup final defeat to Juventus.

What should have been a joyous occasion turned into a nightmare.

No one will ever forget the horror that unfolded before our eyes that night and, 24 years on, let's all pause for a moment to pay our respects to those unfortunate victims...

I trust Liverpool FC, Juventus and UEFA will collaborate in marking the 25th anniversary in next year's final. If the final isn't on the day itself, perhaps a charity match between the players.

I can't believe they played the game, I was waiting to watch the match as events unfolded, eventually decided to go out and consequently missed the match. Should never have been played at Heysel, one of the most costly decisions in football.
Never buy from PC World, product quality is poor and their 'customer service' is even poorer

RIP with sincere, sincere condolences.

This tragedy has been haunting me of late. We expect full support for Hillsborough but it seems dont know how to handle Heysel.

The time is coming when we have to reconcile the happenings of that night and truely get together with Juventus to pay proper homage to those who lost their lives in such an un-necessary and violent way. Regardless of the stadium, the incompetent fan segregation and disorganisation of the police - it should never have happened - it was initiated by the fans.

I would like to see the club take a lead on this and outline a number of events and timeframe to bring this terrible event into the open so proper reconciliation can take place in respectful ways that satisfy mainly Juventus as a club and fanbase that we havent forgotten nor try to avoid the blame for what happened. Regardless of any build up prior to the wall collapsing, 39 Juve fans died which is totally, totally unacceptable. LFC owes it to Juventus to make amends, just as we expect justice out of Hillsborough.

Just my penny´s worth.

2nd that, both clubs should do something next season and make sure this thing never happens again.

I also agree, this is a tragedy which must never be allowed to happen again.

Very good post Reg.

I whole heartedly agree with everything you've said. I think that for too long the club and more so the fans have tried to clear their conscience of what happened that night by not fully acknowledging their part.

No matter how many times the state of the stadium is brought up or the poor organisation of the whole evening we have to accept that actions of "Liverpool Fans" on that night contributed to the deaths of 39 people.

I think it would be helpful for the club to maybe go to Juventus and UEFA with a proposal for a fund raising game to be held in Italy with all profits going to any charities connected with the disaster or chosen by the victims families.

Nella memoria dei 39 - In memory of the 39.

RIP

great post mate. LFC have & will never forget heysel, everyone connected with the club have also shown since that tragic event, that it is part of our history no matter how painfull it was.

i will always remember joe fagen's emotion & hurt when he came off the plane on the return home that he quit as a result of heysel, it was to much for him & i for one will never forget heysel. many say the final should never had been played, but to abandon the game may have made matters worse. i personally don't know about that, it is to painfull to have an opinion about this foe me.

what i would say is that anyone on this forum who hasn't been on the anfield tour, please do so as you will go into the museum also & see the section dedicated to juventus & heysel, it is very moving & shows as a football club we will never forget that tradgedy.

R.I.P THE 39  my thoughts & prayers to all family's also effected.

Agree with the sentiments tony , i personally don't think the picture is very appropriate mate. That's from someone who was a :censored: scared 15 year old at the stadium .

We take what part we played on that horrible night to our graves.

RIP 39 . Y.N.W.A.
