I know its from KOPTALK and they arnt really reliable, but Leej said this yesterday.
OWEN SET TO RETURN, BAROS SET TO KOP IT?
KOP Talk 21 January 2005
Insider sources are today reporting that Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen is considering making a return to Anfield in the summer and Liverpool chiefs are said to be keen on bringing him back should the opportunity present itself.
The player has been linked with a possible £10million move to Arsenal, Newcastle United or Chelsea with no mention of Liverpool by anyone in the media. However our source at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu insists that Owen has already sent signals to Anfield that he would re-sign for the club if we were to make a move for him at the end of the season.
Right now the club are not desperate to sign another striker but if Michael Owen became available, the club would naturally be interested. The surprise news this evening though is that Milan Baros is facing the axe. Manager Rafael Benitez has only just strengthened his attacking options with the signing of striker Fernando Morientes, but it would seem that he's prepared to cash in on Baros to fund a move for a direct replacement. We understand that Milan's name cropped up during the negotiations for Fernando Morientes (Real and Barca were both sniffing around him last summer) although no deals were struck relating to Owen or Baros. Even if Owen remains where he is or goes elsewhere, Baros will be available for transfer in the summer.
You'll be confused as much as us as to why the manager would sell the Czech international but it's alleged that Rafa is unhappy with the player's "regular failure to comply with instructions" and Owen, who currently has the best strike rate in Spain, could replace him. That would certainly be ironic, especially as Morientes has just left Madrid because he couldn't get a game because of the former Liverpool hitman.
Earlier this week Owen publicly said that he was "frustrated" at having to sit on the bench and that he'd never be happy doing that at any club but tomorrow's Independent newspaper will tomorrow quote him as saying that he is happy at Real Madrid.
Owen told reporters: "I've got this year and three more signed on my contractand I am happy here. Life is very good. I enjoy things both off and on the pitch. I've got plenty of fire in my belly because I want to perform more than I am performing at the moment. That is the only thing that I would change out here.
"In past seasons for Liverpool I've had more ups and downs, but since I've been over here I've come off after every game being quite satisfied with myself."
Owen's quotes don't really rubbish our claims about him but they also don't really support them as there's no firm statement either way in what he says. I expect though that the basis of our report stems from his agent who appears to be testing the water incase things do not improve significantly for his client between now and the summer. After all, he has been playing really well and he's in great form yet at Real that doesn't guarantee you anything. What we find more interesting though is that Liverpool are considering bringing him home but surely that would be a messy affair with the Spanish giants wanting Gerrard? But what if we miss out on the Champions League or fail to secure investment? Will Owen want to come then?
A take-over at the club and the re-signing of Michael Owen would almost certainly help us keep hold of the Liverpool skipper. Where that leaves Milan though, we don't know. Is it not coincidental that a couple of clubs have been linked with Baros over the last week or so? The timing is odd especially when on face value the manager and the player don't look to have any obvious problems. Milan certainly looks happy enough, maybe he is but if Rafa wants shot, the player's feelings won't come in to the equation.
One thing is for sure and that is that it's going to be a very confusing time between now and the start of next season. Things are certainly going to hot up in the board room over the coming weeks and those fighting to keep it or secure it will all want to win over the support of the fans. New investors will make promises to deliver the best players in the world, the current owners will also need to fight back should they wish to put up a fight which has clearly happened so far. Do they think that by bringing Michael Owen home they'd be on a winner?
I'm quietly confident and optimistic that things are looking good right now because I sense a change in direction at Anfield. What worries me though is that I'm a realist and that things can change within minutes in football. On one hand we could have new owners, Steven Gerrard and a proper transfer budget (without borrowing) for Rafa to spend in the summer but on the other hand the current owners could still be in place and Steven Gerrard and Milan Baros could be sold off.
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.
