I think with any prospective player we have to look at what he brings to the table in terms of (and I hesitate to use the word, Stu will love this) attributes. If a guy is a goalscorer, how does he score? will he be able to score against better defenders?
For example, if we were to sign Van Nistelroy or Henry (I KNOW WE WONT ITS JUST A FOR INSTANCE) its fairly safe to assume they would score goals for us. The only variable would be they would have to put up with inferior service to what they are used to.
If you sign a foriegn striker, from a poor league ie France, would he be able to cope with the Prem? Obviously its safer if he's uprooted trees in Europe and done well against English clubs (Drogba) or conversely more risky if he hasn't (Cisse). All this is very well as long as the price reflects the risk. You'd expect to pay top dollar for Henry or Drogba because you'd be failrly sure they would do the biz.
On the question of Dean Ashton, he has been a good player for a couple of seasons now. It's only this year that he's really exploded onto the scene but everyone in the Prem will have checked him out at some point. I've got him down as a Beattie type striker, big strong lad, good in the air. Not that pacy or posessing of great touch though. At about 2 million, maybe Bolton or Pompey might think he's worth a punt and I wouldn't necessarily disagree but for us? I don't think so on balance.
