I haven't seen paletta play but I am concerned that we dont defend set pieces very well and Agger doesn't look that tall. Hyppia gives the ball away too much for my liking

We used this formation against Newcastle last season and it worked really well. I'm surprised Rafa hasn't used again since.

I have never seen paletta or aurellio play so haven't included tham. Do you think Mellor and FSP, have a future with us. I reckon FSP looks like he could be a very skillful player with pace, at the moment he just lacks consistency. Mellor I am unsure of, but without these two we probably wouldn't have beat olympiakos in the champions league winning season.

i saw paletta play vs Crewe, he won everything, he's fast, accurate and wins the ball......

I would love FSP to play this season.......though im not sure about hyppia, granted he has done a brilliant job for us but i feel he is lacking pace......

One name we have been linked with is Johnathan Woodgate.......your thoughts?

I think he's a good player, a bit injury prone though. Also I dont like the fact that he was involved in that affray case a few years ago so not too keen on the idea.

It is a good idea to leave out Alonso for this match as first, Sissoko, who may be doubtful for this match, tend to offer more defensively, and second, we have one eye on the midweek fixture against Eindhoven in Holland. Gerrard is shifted to right as he seem to assert himself more in the middle rather than the right (when Alonso and Sissoko in the middle). Carragher, Riise, and Warnock will be rested for this match, tending to their recent injury troubles.

I expect Carragher and Riise to return for our first European outing, while Gerrard will be shifted to the right. Garcia should play this as his style is more suited to the continental game. Carragher will partner Hyypia in lieu of Agger as Hyypia's wealth of European experience will do us good here.

Im sorry but that team V Chelsea wouldn't work. The defence is fine, but maybe have Riise at leftback instead of Aurielo. The midfield wouldn't work, Chelsea's weakness is lack of pace at the back and they have poor fullbacks, so why not exploit this? Use Pennant and Gonzalez down the wings who can both beat Chelsea fullbacks and put in a beauty of a cross. I would play Sissoko and Gerrard in the centre of the park, with Sissoko canceling out Lampard and Ballacks threat, while Gerrard drives forward. Also upfront you have no pace, Crouch and Kuyt aren't the quickest of players, so i'd play Bellamy and Kuyt, Kuyt over Crouch just because of his strength and movement, Kuyt is probably stronger than John Terry so we can use this to our advantage while Bellamy runs on.

For those wondering what will happen with Agger/Hyppia when Carragher is fit again, I have 2 words, Newcastle Away.
I have a feeling we might have seen more of that last season had Agger not been injured. This may also be better for Aurelio and help balance his attacking and defensive duties. Just not sure what would happen on the right side as Pennant is no wing back (what was that Rafa? "Yet" !) Doubt it myself but never underestimate the Gaffer and his possibilities.
