He played well against spurs which he played in his natural position ..in the hole.

He's getting better and better and it has a lot to do with just his confidence, he came in looking like a nervous wreck at times but now he's an entirely different player.

maybe i'm just clutching at straws :D

I thought he was off the pitch when maxi came on?

I`m not sure about that mate, played very deep tonight and for half the match Kuyt had no one within 30 yards of him.
He did mix it well tonight though.

Did not saw Aquaman played tonight.
but heard that he played well "in the hole"
why does it need to take an injury to SG for him to play in the hole?
isnt that Aquaman's naturall position?

You dont buy an AM and play him as a CM right?
If we can play SG as a more neutral minded CM and Aquaman as a more attacked minded AM,
i believed that we can achieve more balance in the team.

of coz this will means dropping Lucas, which doesnt exist in Rafa's dictionary.

You see what you want to see I suppose. I still don't see a return which will even potentially come anywhere near making him look like a 20 million pound player I'm afraid.

"Little faith and much misery" ???

Faith in what exactly? I'm giving my opinion of a footballer, if you're asking me to have "faith" that infact I'm totally wrong and he's about to become a Worldbeater, I'm going to have to let you down I'm afraid. I know having "faith" and insisting that you "believe believe believe" is all the go around these parts, but as it's a football forum and all that, I prefer to pass an oppinion based on how good a player he does or doesn't look. I know I could take the view that as he wears a red shirt with our badge on it it therefore follows that he's a wonderful player and about to become a roaring success, but there are plenty enough of people on here already who take such stances without me adding to their number.

As for misery, I'm just about the least miserable I've been in many a year right now. Whether or not Aquilani makes it will not influence that one way or another. As for your question about what a 20 million poind player looks like, given our last two have looked like Robbie Keane and Alberto Aquilani I'm in the same boat as yourself on that one. I can barely remember. I do know though that a 25 million pound player looks like Carlos Tevez, a 12 million poind player looks like Gareth Barry, and a 10 million pound one looks like Darren Bent.

Aquilani at this moment in time looks like a 5 million pound one to me, but we'll see. I'll try and drum up some "faith", and sit on the floor cross legged chanting "believe believe believe" if you think it'll help.

It's obviously unreasonable to expect a Torres like success everytime you plunge in, but it is/was legitimate to expect a better replacement for Alonso than the one we got, for the money we spent.

i understand your reservations about aquilani, mick. he certainly hasn't hit the ground running as the 20 million pound player we were hoping and expecting to see. i think its too early to write him off and i think its also too early to say he's going to be class. i think its fair to say, though, that bit by bit he seems to be progressing. whether its his improving fitness (though surely to god as a professional athlete he must be fit by now), whether he's getting to grips with the english game, or whether its something else i don't know.

he was under pressure from the fans to come in and save our season, to fit seamlessly into the alonso shaped hole and spray wonderful and incisive passes around the pitch. this was never going to happen in a month of sundays, and the fact that it isn't happening is maybe the cause of some reservations about him doing it at all - but i think we've seen glimpses of what he's capable of. i think he has the potential to be a really good player but i also think it comes down to whether he has the appetite and capacity to adjust his game to the 'english' style. having said that though i do believe i saw a little bit of aggression from him last night on one or two occasions so maybe thats a start.

He did better last night and showed glimpses of hopefully things to come.
In the hole he did seem to get more time on the ball and you can see he does have good vision.

He wasnt brilliant last night but did well enough to justify his selection, hopefully he can gain some confidence from that and kick on.
