Ok, this for all you whizz kids out there.!! I got myself a laptop last Tuesday night from PC World. Along with that I bought a Philips Wireless router. So on returning home my other half went on ahead a set everything up. For the last week the both of us have been trying to install the wireless, without any luck!! When the laptop finds the wireless we cant get on the internet on either the main computer or laptop. Its really starting to get on my nerves. So last night we took the laptop and the router back to PC World to see if maybe there was a problem with them. The laptop picked up their wirelass straight away and then he took the router away  put it in their computer and Hey Presto the bloody thing worked!!! He told us everything we had to do to get it to work. So we headed home happy that everything was gonna work. But you've guessed it.... IT STILL DONT WORK!!!!
Anyone out there have any idea's?

you mean it's a router
so the problem could lie at your (broadband) modem?
(i assume you didn't bring your modem with you to the vendor to have it examined)
probably the router hasn't get (wirelessly) connected with the modem

I dont know what the problem is. Everything is working the way it is supposed to. We have got the laptop working once but we lost our main pc. We had to ring NTL and they had to give us step by step instructions to get it back. It turned out that the main PC had reset itself. I'm not a tech head so I have saved the link that s@int gave me and my other half is going to go through it tonight.

Also someone told me that they did'nt have to use the disc provided with the router they just went and plugged everything in and it worked. Would that be true??

hmmmm, wireless always causes problems.

Theres not usually any security on routers when you buy it, meaning you dont have to mess around with the settings of the router itself.

It maybe you have the wrong type of router, you may have bought an ADSL router which isnt compatiable with NTL, which is cable.

what is the full name of the router.

Nah its not your wireless router. its simpler than that i reckon.

Your laptop tells you that you are connected to the network, see the symbol in the bottom right corner of your desktop shows you the signal strength. But when you open the browser (Eg. Internet Explorer(IE)) it says page cannot be displayed.

2 possibilities
1) Simple setting in IE
2) Your router is not automatically assigning you an IP address (bit harder to fix)

1 - goto to the tool tab in IE. scroll down to internet options, and click on the connections tab, then click lan settings. I suspect you have it set-up for a proxy server at work. So when you get home just click on automatically detect settings - then when you get back to work click on the proxy server. walah!

2 - For this one you need to assign the ip address of you router in your network settings. More difficult, but i will explain how if 1 does not work.
