I suppose it depends on what you use your phone for. I use mine as my primary device for music and the occasional vid on the commute to work, plus I surf shed loads and use messenger and a load of other apps. I justify the price tag in the sense that I need a device for music if I got a different phone id have to shell out 150-200 for an ipod touch anyway as all those phones have such poor battery lifes I can't trust them to be my main music players. So may as well just pay the extra and get the iphone. The turning point for me when I decided to send the HTC desire HD back was when I went to sleep with like 50% battery remaining and when I woke up it would be dead.
And btw there are plenty of free apps for iphone, but generally the better ones are pay for. However some big ones are free like skype, windows live messenger ect... Android may have pretty much all free apps but thats more down to Android wanting to rope people into using android more. Believe me im sure the bosses at google jizz off to the prospect of having a similar online content store to itunes.
The new line up of android phones with dual core processors look decent but don't get sucked into all that dual core talk. It's only good if the OS is making use of the extra core, else it is just supporting the 1st one. And I don't think android supports dual core till OS Honeycomb which is still way off.
In my experience stick with the iphone. You may end up paying a bit more but you will have a better overall experience. The others might boast slightly better hardware but ultimately iphone is still the bar at which every TS phone that enters the market is measured against and there is a good reason for that. Also if it's price you are worried about, the 5th iteration of iphone is around 3 months away from announcement so it's likely iphone 4 will drop in price then. If you like custom roms ect... then go with android, but if you were into that you would be using it anyway.
