read a similar thread on another forum and thought it may be nostalgic. I know most on here are not old enough to remember too far back but I thought I would start us off with 3 things my grandad told me about...

Chimney Sweeps - always new how many rods it took before telling you it was time to go look for the brush coming out of the chimney!

And the coal man - no groans about manual handling from him trudging up and down the garden path with a cwt (that's about 50kilos for the young'ens) sack of the black stuff on his shoulder.

Not to mention the gas man resting his ladder against that sticky-out-bit at the top of the lamp post whilst he climbed up to wind the timer and check the gas mantle.

......kids out in the street kicking a ball, climbing trees, getting dirty and mucky like the days of yore.....

Instead, Mummy and Daddy pile them in to the back a 4x4 and drive them off the an expensive "activity" centre, where they "play" in a sterile environment, and wash their hands in bacteria-killing soap on the way out.....Is it any wonder there is a HUGE increase in allergies, asthma, and all sorts of bronchial infections that weren't prevalent 30-40 years ago ?
