Milan Baros broke few records during his lean spells with Aston Villa or Liverpool, but the striker, now plying his trade with the French club Lyons, smashed one out of sight on Thursday when it was announced he had been caught speeding at 271kph (169mph) in his Ferrari.
A French newspaper, Le Progres, quoted police as saying the Czech forward had broken the record for speeding for that French region, set by a motorcyclist who hit 248 kph in 2000.
Baros was driving on a motorway not far from Lyons when he was caught by police, who confiscated the Ferrari and took his driving licence. The 26-year-old, who is injured at the moment, had to take a taxi back to Lyons. He faces a heavy fine and a three-year driving ban.
Baros was later to explain he was rushing to rescue a young lady with the unlikely name of Shanks72, who he said was last seen in a police station in England.
