No mate, I don't see. Why can a Mod not see an offensive post and be pro-active about it, why do you have to wait till someone "goes running to the mods" before taking action. Obviously if you don't see it or you don't consider it offensive thats one thing, but many times a MOD posts underneath or on the same page as an abusive post, without comment.

What I read that to mean (and I will stand corrected if need be) was that who are we to say what offends people and what does not ?

Its overkill for us to start making the rules on whats offensive and whats not. If we as mods do this then this place will end up like certain other LFC forums that are square as fu.ck.

For instance, I get called a fatty, to me thats water off a ducks back, to someone who is unhappy with the way they look and not so confident - maybe someone who is depressed with their appearence - that could be the most hurtful thing in the World.

When do you step in ?

I see what you are getting at Leon, but if someone calls you a "fkn fat c*nt " unless they are a close personal friend and its in context with the rest of the post,  I think its safe to assume that its got an abusive element to it.

Deciding when to step in is the hardest part, which is why you MODS get the big bucks. But maybe its better to step in too early than too late?

Like I said before, once you accept abuse where do you draw the line?

Well if you do the job, do the job. And that means Bad Bob that you don't have to bear with insults. If the fúcker insists, card. If he doesn't get the message, card. If he persists, ban.

The two protagonists issue (hence the "antagonising folk" comment) was clearly aimed at the sentiments of this very thread.

The comment about whether or not you (as in a mod) finds something abusive or not, is a salient and quite pertinant one. As Leon points out - there have been times when his weight has been called into question. Im certain he and many others of a similar build can take it as well as dish it...i put that into the 'sticks and stones' category, if we are to determine some almanac with a scale of offending terms listed.

Clearly terms which descend into more sinister territory are however, considered in a different light. Paranoia can play havoc with many peoples interpretation when text is the medium used to present an insight. And not all the 'language' used is going to be up for analysis. Common sense and a spirit of 'banter' is a positive vibe and should always be treated with the wit with which it is intended, even if it should be sarcastic in nature. Hell, we are grown adults here.  Picking the bones out of each and every argumentative term and its counter is an entirely tedious task indeed. Particularly when the culprits will continue to do so, no matter what. I think we can all agree with that.

The crown of Impartiality must be adorned at all times. Which is exactly what is difficult about the 'job' once you have already established some roots, or dialogue with the parties involved. Some members, unfortunately choose to eschew existing 'lines of communication' with their fellow members, simply because of that neutrality and conciliatory approach which has to be adopted. No longer, your 'mates' (however virtual) - now you get to be associated with the tag of 'klink' or 'keeper of the watchtower'. Which is both fine by me (should that be the case) and like it or lump it - a consequence of taking on such a role inevitably.

Iam not here though to lose sleep over 'relations' i forge, or lose online. I (along with most others) frequent the place to find out/debate and vent frustration/joy over the business of LFC. The key difference involved in participating in that facility, is that certain posters will by and large augment the experience into a pleasurable one. Occasionally, the opposite will occur. Rare, but nevertheless, that needs addressing. This is why these 'issues' are dealt with on merit (speaking on my own behalf) and not with an iron fist.

However having said that, there comes a stage when all avenues have been exhausted and a definitive resolution MUST be executed, for the good of all concerned. That may yet come into the general picture. I would hope though...that good will can eventually prevail. And thats always preferable provided both camps are in agreement. The ball, as they say - is firmly in their court on that score.

Love the way you make out it's everyone elses fault that you're abused from left, right and centre.  You're so close to being history on here you know.  So, so close. 

Don't think we're not discussing the best course of action to take.  Your little constant digs at the mods don't go unnoticed.  You don't deserve any kind of explanations or protection from us (me) as far as I'm concerned.

You are right, its a hard one to call, the only one to know when its has gone too far is the members that gets hurt.

but there is also the point that it dont look nice on the forum to see 2 good members being nasty with each other 9a ot of it was said in fun).

It also makes it much more difficult to post as if you support a view held by one of the protagonists it appears you are taking their side rather than just agreeing with them on a particular point. I have deleted quite a few posts now because of this. So you will all have to live out your lives never knowing the gems you have missed.

On a more serious note, I have to agree that this feud must come to an end now. It's getting really samey having to look past two or three pages of insults just to read some actual footy discussion.

I honestly believe that there is no need for personal insults at all and once you as MODs start to accept them it becomes ever more difficult as to where you draw the line.

I am not saying give out cards, but a quick word in PM would save things escalating and save peoples "face".

A fair point in theory, mate, but the reality is that we are (almost) all adults on here and it shouldn't take Mods to tell someone not to insult people.  We tried to be more interventionist when we first signed up and it did have a certain degree of success.  But, having a quiet word via PM for every insult dished on here is:

1) Far too time consuming (verges on the impossible on match days)

2) A bit too klinkish

That second point is important because some of the rucks on here are what make this place great.  If they are undertaken in the right spirit, the banter can be quite enjoyable.  None of us Mods are lily white and we all were involved in more than a few spats in our time before becoming Mods so we, I think correctly, worried that cracking down on each and every barbed comment would violate the spirit of this place before too long.  We even had several comments to that effect early days.  So, we've tried to take a more relaxed approach since then.  Perhaps too relaxed, as it turns out. 

But, moderating only works when people are willing to be moderated.  If posters don't respect our decisions, how can we operate?  I gave Peewee a legitimate card a while back and was abused publicly and privately for it for weeks.  I've been called names, had my integrity questioned and have received a series of jibes about everything from my wealth to whether I go to matches or not.  Yet, I'm supposed to put all that to one side when Peewee reports a Lando post?  I'm supposed to spring to his defense despite the fact that I have received nothing but stick and abuse from him in my short time as a Mod?  Nah, the phrase "you made your bed..." springs to mind.  Apparently that makes me a weak Mod but I too am only human.

Too right you wouldn't want to be a Mod, mate, because some of the people you have to deal with on here will do your head in.
