If a great player is defined by his exploits solely on the field and ignoring the darker side of these great players, then it has to be Diego Maradona for he single handedly inspired his team to 2 successive world cup finals, winning 1 in the process. In Mexico 1986, he scored at least 2 superb individual goals against England and Belgium. Against England, he slalomed pass some 7 or 8 players beginning from his own half. Nobody repeated this feat at the highest level again, and not even Pele could conjour this feat on his own.

If the greatest player also has to be more angellic and less of a devil, then the greatest is Pele. Zidane is a great player and had to face a much more athletic and tactically adept opposition in the present gamen but he has also been sent off a couple of times after venting his frustrations on his markers and tormentors. So had Maradona but I don't recall Pele having to face that ignomity.

Geroge Best? Overrated and overhyped by the British media, much like Gazza and now Shrek.

Other players worthy of mention are Franz Beckenbauer, Johan Cruyff, and Michel Platini. i would say that Romario and Rolando, apart from Zidane, are the present day (and just past) greats also.

surprsisingly Maradona isn't there, perhaps cos of his drug usage, still he should be in there. Zidane will no doubt be inducted once he retires.

Its called Politics mate.

Diego has to be number one on that list. END OF!!!

And for those talking of Pele scoring over 1,000 goals in his career. Most of these were in a poor Brazilian league and the MLS (please!!!). He never came to Europe and for this reason IMO he cannot be near Diego. To be a great you hav to conquer Europe too, and Diego done this amazing fashion with Napoli.

Just imagine Rooney going to Portsmoth and taking them to the league title and a UEFA cup. Thats the equivalent of what he did!!

Lets not forget winning the under 17 (?) Wrld cup 1978 on his own and then doing the same in '86 too. Add to that had he not been riled in the 1982 world cup, he would have probably lead the Argies to that too!!!

The man was a legend and I dont care about off field problems, on the pitch is what counted, and for me hardly anyone comes close........Though I have to say that Platini (IMO) would run Pele close for second place, as would Cruyff!!

Well I never seen much of Pele,so I would have to say Maradona .My old man seen both and he would argue Pele was THE COMPLETE  player . If you ask me its a toss-up! Baresi should be on the list.
