the pressure starts early as well, at the top of the division other teams apply pressure by just winning, look what happened last season, we drew our first game at home to sunderland and were 2 points behind city and united after 1 game, and that was the closest we got to them all season.
it doesnt matter how much of the season has gone, it might only be 3 weeks in but once the top teams get about 5 points ahead then all of a sudden you cant afford to lose your next game, if the top teams get 8 points ahead then it`s unlikely that you`ll pull that back, infact odds are the gap will grow and grow.
add to that the pressure from discontented fans and a type of media scrutiny that he`s never known before (any loss at anfield makes the headlines on the backpages of the sunday newspapers, at wigan if he lost it probably merited a few paragraphs about 3 pages in, if he loses a game here there`ll be headlines like `martinez out of his depth` and `not good enough roberto` etc splashed everywhere)
1 or 2 losses and suddenly he starts getting discussed on radio phone in`s up and down the country and the sky tv mob start analysing and disecting his every mistake, ex players who are big noises in the media start to give their opinion.
plus liverpool is a big city with passionate and opinionated supporters, football is a religion here, it`s the 3rd biggest city in england as well so as a work environment it`s a lot different from a little rugby town like wigan.
Feck me mate, I hope Martinez doesn't stumble upon your post ! Its enough to give me nightmares and I'm just a Fan !

I just hope he sticks to his principles and plays the method of fluid football that used to be synonymous
with Liverpool over the years ,that way if he loses games he will be afforded some patience because the
Kop will endear to his practice of playing possession football ..

Rafa has been overlooked ,and I bet there's a few tears shed in the Benitez household in the next few

1 - He's young. The idea of having such a young manager at LFC is strange because our managers (with the exception of the King in his first stint) have always been older and more experienced. It might make a nice change for the players to have someone with such enthusiasm and youth on their side.
2 - He's Spanish. Nationality shouldn't really matter but the fact he is Spanish can only be a positive thing when it comes to working with the likes of Pep Segura and Rodolfo Burrell. We've had a Spanish flavour at the club for a number of years now and I kinda like it, particularly with so many good players coming out of that country. He is also very personable and articulate and you get the impression he will be good at getting his ideas across to the players on the training pitch.
3 - He has a full understanding of English football. Gets bandied about by some as the be all and end all but as we know, it isn't a guarantee for success. However, there have been a good few European managers with great pedigrees who have struggled when thrown into the ultra-competitive (and ultimately less technical) type of football that gets played in England. At least Martinex won't get taken by surprise at the football played agains the likes of...........ah Wigan (haha) on a cold Sunday aftenoon.
4 - He has done well at Wigan with very little money. I know a few of us (myself included) have compared his record at Wigan to that of Paul Jewell and Steve Bruce who both achieved superior league finishes (plus Bruce even managed a Wembley appearance in the League Cup) however, Martinez has had to do so with a massively trimmed wage bill and looking at his transfer dealings he's barely had a penny to spend. On his time at Swansea, it does seem fashionable to give him a lot of the credit for the good work that Rodgers is doing now and I must admit I don't think that's right but he did have a good stint there and they seem to have thought very highly of him.
5 - He wants to play the right way. Was very interesting to read the article about his technical and tactical approach to the game that was posted up earlier in this thread. I love talking X and O's and he certainly seems to be very bright and progressive in this department. If you can take a guy like that and then give him better players and some funds to go out and bring in more then perhaps you can go somewhere. He has come across as a bit indecisive when it came to the set-up and style of play at Wigan last season but you have to admit that when he got it right down the stretch they pulled off some fantastic results. They beat us, They beat the mancs and they absolutely spanked the barcodes who were on a fantastic run at the time.
6. He talented. I don't think anyone can deny that he is a young talented manager. If he left Wigan and then went to a club like Villa, turned them around and got them back in Europe then I think perhaps everyone would be more positive and accepting. Because then we would have seen an arc of progress whereby the next obvious step is a club like ourselves (at least in our current rut). Well perhaps (just maybe) he doesn't need that next career stop-off at Villa? Perhaps he will come in and get these lads playing with more conviction and attacking verve. You have to feel like we will need to get off to a good start because the boo birds will be circling but maybe he will turn out to be a star.
