EXCLUSIVE: VICTOR TO BOOST REDS FIREPOWER
EXCLUSIVE TRANSFER WINDOW: THREE DAYS TO GO BUT CISSE'S ON HIS WAY
By Simon Mullock
LIVERPOOL will complete the signing of Spanish international Victor from Deportivo La Coruna in the next 48 hours.
Rafa Benitez is set to follow up the shock capture of Robbie Fowler from Manchester City with a swoop for a player he believes can finally solve his team's right-wing problem.
Victor - full name Victor Sanchez del Amo - was pulled out of the Deportivo squad to face Atletico Madrid last night after agreeing a three-and-a-half-year deal with the Reds.
It will bring Benitez's transfer window swoops to four following the arrivals of Fowler, Daniel Agger and Jan Kromkamp, but the Liverpool boss is now looking for a buyer for striker Djibril Cisse.
The Frenchman is set to pay the price for his inconsistent form - culminating in a horrendous miss in the defeat at Manchester United last week - and Benitez is hoping that Marseille will revive their interest before February 1.
Cisse, signed from Auxerre less than two years ago for £10m, has endured a torrid time on Merseyside and last week he was cautioned by police investigating an alleged assault on the Frenchman's wife. Liverpool may even be inclined to allow Cisse to move to Marseille on loan until the end of the season, if they can reach an agreement about a permanent deal eventually being done.
Jerzy Dudek could also be a late departure - if Cologne meet Liverpool's £4m asking price for the out-of-favour Polish international keeper.
But Benitez will be delighted with the capture of Victor.
He worked with the 29-year-old when he was a youth-team coach at Real Madrid, with Victor graduating to the first team to play a vital role in the club's 1997 title win.
Victor later moved to Racing Santander, who sold him on to Deportivo for £4m. He made his international debut for Spain in 2000.
He is out of contract in the summer and Benitez turned to him after being priced out of moves for Benfica's Simao, Luciano Galletti of Atletico Madrid and Seville's winger Daniel Alves.
Liverpool have been using skipper Steven Gerrard in a role wide on the right - and the England international has excelled there.
But Benitez wants more natural width in his team and he also believes that he will get the best out of Gerrard if he unleashes him through the middle.
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.
