SCHARNER SET FOR ANFIELD TALKS

Paul Scharner is set for talks with Liverpool next week over a possible free transfer to Merseyside.

New Reds boss Roy Hodgson is thought to be an admirer of the versatile 30-year-old, who left Wigan after his contract expired at the end of last season.

Hodgson tried to sign the Austrian on three occasions when manager of Fulham, but failed in each attempt.

It was also thought that the 62-year-old was trying to secure his signature at Craven Cottage before moving to Anfield at the start of July.

Aston Villa and Sunderland are also rumoured to be interested in landing Scharner's signature, but Liverpool is believed to be his preferred destination.

If the deal is to be successful, Scharner could possibly fill the void left by defensive midfielder Javier Mascherano should the Argentine depart.

"Roy Hodgson and Paul Scharner - this is a special relationship," said Scharner's agent, Valentin Hobel.

"Hodgson thinks that Paul's strengths in midfield are better than his attributes in central defence.

"Liverpool would be a dream, of course, but we are in contact with several clubs. Because he is a free transfer, he can choose."

Kjaer has just gone to Wolfsburg for about 8-9 million pound. I really think we should have had a serious look at him for that kind of money. He's only 21 after all and has already played two regular seasons in italy and is in the danish national team. I haven't really seen that other fella you mention though.

Kjaer looked very ordinary in the World Cup!!

So did Torres

Exactly Bav.

As did most of the english team, and players like Kaka, Van Persie (even though they made it to the final) and Ronaldo didn't really impress either. You simply can't judge a player solely on his world cup performances (Kjaer only played the first two games aswell coming back from a minor injury), or you'd end up with a team of Dioufs :help

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Hodgson say he would only be procuring English talent in the future ......
Or maybe I misheard and it was actually every player on a free English or not regardless of their abilities would be duly considered if they have an English first name ??? ....... Next up

I actually think Scharner is a very effective player.

Nothing pretty about the way he plays and he's certainly not in the same class as Mascherano in that holding role.  But he can play pretty much anywhere across the defence or in midfield.

We have to look at it rationally.  We have a ridiculously small first team squad and not very much cash.  Therefore an experienced Premiership player like Scharner on a free isn't a bad deal imo.  It's just depressing to think how far we've fallen in recent years that this is what it's come to, but if you're Hodgson and sitting there trying to improve the squad on a shoestring budget, then this is an option I'd be looking at too to be honest.

Totally agree John. He's a good player, who will do a good job in a couple of different positions.

If (when) Mascherano leaves, and let's face it, he wanated away last year and so is pretty certain to be off this year, I wouldn't set myself on fire if Scharner were to come in on a free to be an option.  One area he'd be a major improvement is in defending set pieces, very aggresive in getting to the ball first, and really good in the air.

I won't celebrate Rafa going........ but I will be over the moon if Dalglish comes in. League within 2 years if he gets the job, AND YOU CAN QUOTE ME ON THAT.

sounds to me like Roy has identified areas we need to improve in and is source the right men to do the job needed. We're cr@p at defending set peices so he's looking at this Scharner fellow cos as The Good Yank said...  One area he'd be a major improvement is in defending set pieces, very aggresive in getting to the ball first, and really good in the air

oh and he's getting on without a budget of any size in place. He's no mug this Roy fella
