We cant afford the loan deal apparently, Dossena, Voronin off the wage bill and Babel soon our club is fecked.
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

I've always thought he looked a decent player.

However i did work in Sunderland for a year recently and was surprised to hear that a lot of their own fans don't rate him highly.  A few questioned his workrate - if Benitez has done his homework on this guy, which he will have, then he''s not his type of player I don't reckon.

Maybe his wage demands are too high, we don't know the full picture.
Sunderland appear to be denying everything but the rumours in the media continue, looks as though they want us to buy rather than loan. Assume that would depend on Babel going.

From the Echo:

"LIVERPOOL’S hopes of signing Kenwyne Jones were effectively dead today after Sunderland refused any attempt to do business.

As was reported in later editions of last night’s ECHO, the Reds spent the weekend trying to thrash out a deal to bring the Trinidad & Tobago international to Anfield on loan until the end of the season and were hopeful of doing so.

With Fernando Torres facing a spell on the sidelines due to a knee injury, boss Rafa Benitez wanted to bring Jones to Anfield to give his strike force a physical presence and increase competition for places.

Yet despite the player wanting to switch Wearside for Merseyside, Sunderland would not entertain any thoughts of a loan and insisted the only way the Jones would leave the Stadium of Light during this window was in a cash deal.

The Reds, of course, are not flush with cash at present and had no intentions of meeting Sunderland’s asking price of well in excess of £10m for Jones, who has scored 25 times in 85 appearances for the Black Cats.

Benitez, who is also in the race to sign Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh, is unlikely to give up his search to bring another forward in before the window closes and has vowed to keep “working hard” to find the right man.

Ultimately, i dont think he's good enough for a starting spot when everybody is fit and firing. I think we need another top striker to play upfront with Torres next season (WOULD PUT ALL OUR BUDGET TOWARDS DAVID VILLAAAAAA) but i would think we'd be looking at a better player than Jones... Good backup nonetheless if the price is right.

That's a pretty good assessment of the player. We've needed a big man option ever since we sold Crouch and this lad fits the bill. Don't know about the price, £10 mill seems high but then Dossena cost more than 7 so in that case the lad's a bargain. Big, strong, got some skills, bit lazy (i know that coz father in law is Sunderland to the bone) but he's got some skills and is frightening in the air. Deffo agree that he could be effective with Riera and Johnson in the side. If we can get him on loan it would be a cracking bit of business. If nothing else it will get defences pushing out a touch because you don't want him standing around in the box waiting for crosses all game. I hope it happens.

Looks like the only chance of this happening is if the club can offload Babel.

We shouldnt be going for Jones anyways... not when Arda Turan has only just said he wants to join us.

Sunderland fans dont even rate Jones too highly, they say he has 1 really good game out of 8 and although is a good player they wouldnt be too bothered if  he went.

Liverpool weigh up Kenwyne Jones swoop......
LIVERPOOL are weighing up a £12m bid to prise Kenwyne Jones away from Wearside, according to reports on Merseyside today

The Reds have already tried to land the Trinidad & Tobago striker on loan but have seen their approach rejected by Sunderland.

But Liverpool could come back with a cash offer as manager Rafa Benitez looks to sign cover for Spanish star Fernando Torres and revive the Reds’ faltering campaign.

Benitez has already brought in Argentina striker Maxi Rodriguez on a free transfer from Atletico Madrid this month, but is keen to sign another frontman.

Benitez said: “We will see if we can do something more in this transfer window.

“If we cannot we will stick together for the next challenge. We have a good team, a good squad and not as bad as people think.

“When people say we need two strikers like Torres you say ‘OK. Where are these strikers and how much can you pay for them?’”

A £12m offer from Liverpool would represent a double-your-money offer for Sunderland, who paid Southampton £6m for Jones back in the summer of 2007.

But even more important than the money, as far as Sunderland boss Steve Bruce is concerned, would be finding a replacement for Jones.

Aside from 14-goal top scorer Darren Bent, Jones is Sunderland’s only proven top-level goalscorer, and if he left Bruce would have to bring in another frontman before the January transfer window closes at the end of the month.

Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn admitted at the weekend: “He’s vital to us – we don’t want to get rid of anybody.”

Bruce was trying to sign Schalke striker Kevin Kuranyi, but that deal looks to be off with the German international now likely to see out the remaining six months of his contract before leaving on a Bosman free transfer.

Stoke and Birmingham have also expressed an interest in Jones, with the Blues understood to have offered £11m, but the 25-year-old, who has scored six goals so far this season, is unlikely to move to the Britannia Stadium or St Andrew’s.

i think this deal will happen  if we can get rid of babel  the deal will happen....

and i want it to happen,   who else is going to score are goals we need to finish in the top 4...

Don't doubt he would do a job for us but would he be able to play alongside Torres when he is fit? Could fall into the Crouch trap and fall unhappy quickly at lack of football when Torres fit.

Suppose the argument is "when" Torres is fit and he would maybe play more than we expect!!

I think the financial position of the club will end the Jones rumours, it seems Sunderland will not be willing to let him go on loan, a swap deal with Babel is off the agenda and we just do not have £10-£12 million to throw around for a striker. Benitez needs to go looking for loans or cheap options.

Boyd on a free in the summer.................................? Even if he flopped and we had to sell we should get £3m+ for him, I'm sure the SPL giants would pay (for them) top dollar to take him back up there, and there'd probably be a few down south that might take him as well, not to mention other countries.

I did read something about some kind of deal for Jones to get the transfer through in the summer in a new tax year or something like that.
