Theres not a doubt Wellbeck will play, and he should. Its night and day between him and Andy on the floor. He runs the channels, links up with play, gets involved in the build up.

Brilliant header from Andy, one of the best headed goals you will see, but that game again showed why i cant see him having a future with us unless he develops massively on the floor. His involvement when the ball was on the ground was zero. You only ever saw him when it was launched up in the air. England were ultra basic against Sweden as every pundit/media have stated. Rodgers does not play this way.

Its not just his lack of contribution on the floor, his immobility and lack of movement is a massive negative. Its almost slow motion when he "runs". Wellbeck broke clear in the first half and Carroll was 30 yards behind. Walcott was skimming past defenders when he came on.. Carroll was left way behind play. The chance at the end of the game when England broke away, it was Gerrard and Arsenal fella who were in the box up with play... again, Carroll a good 25/30 yards behind play. When you focus on this closely its alarming. The same happens with us.. Luis Suarez spins a defender and runs clear... Andy left behind play.

He neither has the mobility nor the technique on the floor to play a pass and move game. The direct stuff is his game, and that is not Rodgers.

I thought Carroll's all round contribution in that game was MUCH better than Wellbeck's. The United lad hasn't impressed me that much tbh, he did get a nice fluky goal but other than that, looks like a poor man's Andy Cole. That Ashley Young has been s.hit as well. Can't believe these are the type of caliber in players who help United finish second.  :0

Hodsgon has hinted that Carroll will start at the expense of Wellbeck and will be alongside Rooney - much to D/C's disbelief.

I hope he starts. Think he will too.

A partnership of Carroll and Rooney has the potential to wreak havoc on Ukraine. As for Carroll being poor on the deck, that's nonsense, he might not be in the realms of Xavi, Alonso and Pirlo but he's not poor at all.

Andy's goal was world class, the entire pub I was were ripping into Andy at the start of the match, but my God did they eat humble pie when that goal went in, that was a world class header and Pardew is right, when Andy is in that penalty area and a ball gets floated in, if a sweet connection is made, it's a goal! Hansen and Shearer also said that when Andy is on form, he's unplayable.

Another lad who deserves credit is Theo Walcott, he's becoming quite the player, I didn't think he would but I thought he was excellent for a majority of the season and he looks like a player who really has developed a great confidence. How Milner can start ahead of him on the right is beyond me.

I hope Andy keeps on scoring for England, after the season he has to endure and all the criticism he deserves a chance to silence his critics.

Us Liverpool fans are such good fans aren't we? Even for average strikers like Crouch and Andy, our opinions of them become warped due to our want for them and the team to succeed. I'm afraid, we'll find out soon enough that, with these kind of players taking up the most important positions (including Charlie Adam in the middle, Henderson on the right and downing on the left) in the team, we will be hovering only around 5th-6th position. At best we will be challenging for the CL 4th place but never guaranteed a place at all...

BR will jeopardize his own stint at one of the highest profile jobs in the EPL if he doesn't buy a more mobile and prolific striker in the mould of Sturridge or welbeck. Just going into next season with only Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez as our strikers will be suicidal

Another fact we overlook as fans is that in the EPL, teams play alot tighter, more competitive, the time and space that Carroll had against Sweden will be non-existent in the EPL. Just look at el hadji diouf, during the world cup he looked like a Messi or a Roberto Baggio, but when he came to the premier league, he was pretty average...

Welbeck ?!? Are you being serious ? Welbeck was no more mobile than Carroll.

It always amazes me when fans nail their colours to the mast and will stick to them no matter what.

The general point I made still stands  even if you don't agree with one example I made...

Yes we need another striker to give us options but Carroll has a future.

You forget that Carroll has already done well in the prem for Newcastle and for us during the last month of the season - so trying to compare him to Diouf is quite embaressing.

You inital opinion that he just walked around against Sweden  was both incorrect and pathetic. He was dangerous all night long as well as being outstanding defending. He is looking lean keen and mean and can't wait for him to get back to the club.

I have to laugh at some posters clinging to the faint hope  Rodgers wont see Carroll as a vital component in a new look Reds team.

Carroll wasn't sensational against Sweden but he did his job effectively scored a great goal and linked well with Wellbeck and others for England. Also Hodgson has played down Welbeck's potential in this tournament Carroll has a big future as far as I can see.

That's a bit harsh, but I do agree with you that I think BR will factor Carroll into the team alongside Suarez. I think both of them can form a dangerous partnership, and the versatility he offers to our attacking options can be a real asset. What we do need though is for both Suarez and Carroll to start finding the net more consistently.
