Well somebody of his ability is the only way I'd ever consider moving Gerrard into central midfield. If we could get a Diego or an Aguero level player it maybe worth a punt but that's hardly realistic is it?

man city is defying reality mate. even lescott wants to join them now. if im not wrong, Elano has left man city? he would have been a bargain i feel.

Well, yeah, but like I said before there are communities of them that really aren't like the typical stereotype that you know of them. There are a lot of them, though, that do paint them in a very bad light.

Anyway, this thread's about Xabi and not travellers. The thread's been polluted enough of talk of them for god knows what reason. Mad.

was one of the first moves of the summer, so easy to forget about. Probably deserved to be more high profile, as he is a very very good player and Juve are a big club.

Liverpool's Xabi Alonso was key to Premier League title hopes

Liverpool's chances of wresting the Premier League title from Manchester United this season may have taken a big hit with Xabi Alonso's impending £30 million move to Real Madrid.

The Telegraph  05 Aug 2009

The Spain international has been an integral member of Rafa Benitez's squad since his arrival from Real Sociedad for £10.7m back in 2004.

Last season in particular Alonso shone as Liverpool challenged United all the way and finished just four points behind the eventual champions.

And the statistics prove that Liverpool are a far more successful side when Alonso plays than when he doesn't, prompting many observers to question whether Benitez has just sold Liverpool's Premier League title hopes.

Over the last two seasons Liverpool won 67 per cent of matches that Alonso played in, compared to 46 per cent without.

That's a staggering difference and proves just how key the 27-year-old was to Liverpool's recent domestic success.

When Alonso was absent, Liverpool won less then half their games and regardless of whether Liverpool have made an £18m profit on the player, filling the hole left by his exit will not be easy and will not come cheap.

Roma's Alberto Aquilani has been linked with a £19m move to Anfield. However, there are no assurances he will slot into the Liverpool team, and the Premier League's frenetic pace, as seamlessly as Alonso did.

The Spaniard lent genuine balance to the Liverpool team and allowed Steven Gerrard to push forward, thereby making Liverpool a more potent attacking threat.

In the 52 matches Alonso played for Liverpool over the last two years, the club won an impressive 35, drawing 14 and losing just four.

Liverpool fans had genuine hopes of witnessing their club end 20 years of waiting for the title this season, but that was before Alonso's departure.

The question now is how long Benitez will be able to hold on to Javier Mascherano, who was hankering after a move to Barcelona even before Benitez finally agreed to sell Alonso to Real.

Mascherano is here at least for this season. Even come next year he will still have 3 years left on his deal right? So the ball will again be in our court. But hopefully Rafa will be looking to bring in someone to replace him too if it comes down to it. Ideally id like someone from the ressies to step up too.

But in regards to that article reg yes it will be harder but other teams have faced similar problems in the past. How many times have the scum lost an important player and still managed to move upwards? Bekham, Van Nistelrooy ect...

We can still win the league next season but only if Rafa brings in the right player now.

I see the c*nts aren't slow to undermine us and stick the boot in already. What a complete load of bollox. Xabi was a good player for us, yeah, but Benitez' Liverpool is - and always has been - more to do with the sum of it's parts rather than the individual. How many goals did Xabi score for us in crucial games last season? Yeah, exactly. Bullsh*tters! I know Alonso wasn't all about goal scoring, but this is one area where I've always been highly critical of him. If we get a player that can pass the ball equally as well as him plus score more goals, then that's a improvemnt to the squad already. It amazes me how some of these so called professional football pundits are too ready to assume the worst before the manager has even acted. Their lack of foresight is staggering.

The quicker Rafa brings someone in the quicker we can take our minds of this loss and move forward.

On a personal note I hope he flops for Madrid. Not got anything against him personally but I hate Madrid and they way they go about their business. It would give me great pleasure to see him fall flat on his face there and them win nothing this season.

I honestly couldn't care if Madrid win la liga by 50 points or if they get relegated. It is of no concern to me. If we meet them in the CL then i start to care about them. People on here are getting very upset about Madrid and wishing the fail this season. So what if they do? What benefit is it to Liverpool Football Club. If Alonso had signed for United or Chelsea then i could understand peoples concens but its a team in a different league in a different country.

It will benefit my emotions to see Xabi flop and probably flogged off to someone else. I imagine the feeling would be a similar satisfaction to when Owen left there.

I know that is a childish thing for me to say but I am upset with him leaving so i have a right to vent.  :D

100% agree with that.. i don't care what they do in Spain its what they do in Europe. and there are plenty of good teams that can knock them out including us.

This Alonso thread should be locked now. he's gone and that's that.. all its turning into is a real slagging fest.

Bye Xabi thanks for the memories.. Istanbul  :buttrock
